Notebooks - Indiana #7 Part 2

Cook, Bettie, ed. Genealogy Newspaper Columns of Robert E. Turman, Evansville, IN: Tri-State Genealogical Society, 1981

Cornwell Connections - The story about "why a mountain climber likes to scale the highest peak" is becoming well known. When one of the explorers of a recent expedition attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest was asked "Why?", the mountain climber looked incredulously at his questioner and replied: "Because it is THERE!"

Many genealogy researchers could well give that same answer to those who ask such questions as "Why do you like to delve so much into the past? What good does it do you to find out who your great-great-great-grandparents were, etc.? Why do you want to learn the history of generations long past?"

The same answer as the mountain climber gave can often be given - "Because it is THERE!"

This answer would not always apply, of course. If a person's immediate grandparents happened to come to the United States from some European or other foreign country, perhaps 100 years ago or so, there sometimes would be nothing more you could learn about them in America than their birth and death dates, and something of their life story in this country. In that case, if you sought any information beyond the generation of your two grandfathers, you would have to go abroad, or

pay to have the research done abroad.

But all the families who thus far have [ben] reviewed in these "Sketches" fall into the category of those who have been in America at least since the days of the Revolutionary War, and many of them were pioneers from the very beginning of the American Colonies. Most of the data concerning the life and times of these Colonial families is THERE, if one will only be patient enough to search for the facts.

Another of the pre-Revolutionary American families was the Cornwell family, one branch of which came out of Maryland and Virginia to Kentucky, and eventually to Indiana. One of them was Anna Corwenll, who at the age of 20 was the bride of our recent subject, William Grigsby, Jr. They were wed in Jefferson County, Ky, on March 25, 1816, and moved to Orange County, Ind., four years later. The Census of 1820 showed that Wm. Grigsby was "head of a family" in Northwest Township in that county that year.

Anna was the daughter of William Cornwell, who also was an early settler in that part of southern Indiana. The old Orange county history contains numerous references to the sons of William Cornwell. On page 583 it was revealed that "Wm. Cornwell was a descendant of the Cornwalls of England. But his branch used an 'e' instead of an 'a' in spelling the family name."

William Cornwell was born Oct. 9, 1768, in Virginia. On his 26th birthday he married 19-year-old Mary F. Swann, probably in Maryland. She was a native of Maryland, born Dec. 10, 1775. She died Aug. 20, 1843 and her husband died Nov. 21, 1845. They are buried in Stamper's Creek Cemetery, four miles east of Paoli, Indiana.

Several Cornwell descendants have spent years in searching for the complete story of this family, some of which is still disconnected.  Cornwell data has been found in various parts of the country. Here are some of the earliest records:

According to the 1850 U.S. Census, which sheds valuable light on the history of many a family, the first two children of Wm. and Mary (Swann) Cornwell were born in Maryland. It is probable that Wm. Cornwell was a son of "Old" Peter Cornwell of Stafford County, Va., which is just across the Potomac river from Maryland.

The Virginia Magazine of History, Vol. 38, p. 184, tells that Peter Cornwell lived near the Rappahannock River in Stafford County. Since there were several intermarriages between the Cornwell, Grigsby and Wolfe families, all of whom were pioneers in that "northern neck" of Virginia, it is certain that they were all of the same "tribe."  One of the Harrison families must have been connected also, in the dim past, for the name "Harrison Cornwell" was one of the key family names handed down for several generations in Ky., and Ind.

"Old" Peter Cornwell was the father of Peter Jr., born June 12, 1780, and Charles Cornwell. Descendants of both these men became a part of the Cornwell-Grigsby colony in Indiana early in the 19th century.

Peter Cornwell Jr. was married on June 24, 1802, Jefferson County, Ky., to Mrs. Elizabeth "Betsy" Branham. She was a daughter of William Arterburn, as indicated in his last will date Sep. 19, 1815, and probated Oct. 14, 1816. In this will, Mr. Arterburn left "$30 to my granddaughter, Lydia McKee, when she marries or comes of age;" and to "my wife, Nancy, I lend my estate and at her death . . . to be divided between my children, Elijah, William Samuel and Presley Arterburn, Betsy Cornwell and Lydia Saffer." Executors were the sons Wm. and Presley; witnesses, Robert Tompkins and Enos McKee. (Bk. 2, p. 48, Jefferson County, Ky.) Peter Cornwell Jr. died Oct. 1, 1842, in Orange County, Indiana.

Charles Cornwell (another son of "Old" Peter) had a son, the Rev. Harrison Cornwell, who was born March 10, 1802, in Virginia. In 1826 he married his first cousin, Nancy Cornwell, daughter of the above Peter Jr. and Elizabeth Arterburn Cornwell, and they spent their lives in Stamper's Creek Township, Orange County, Ind. Harrison Cornwell also had brothers named Daniel and James.

Another of the early Virginia Cornwells was Jacob, who married Mary "Polly" Wolfe in Kentucky in 1810.  Their son, Shelby Cornwell (1810-1892) married Nancy Jane, daughter of Simon Arterburn Cornwell and his wife, another girl named Mary "Polly" Wolfe. [his second wife]

Probably the very first of the Wolfe family to come to Virginia was Peter Wolfe, who arrived about 1720. He had at least three sons - Jacob, who settled in West Va.; Lewis, of Rockingham County, Va.; and John born about 1745, who settled in the Shenandoah Valley and built a Fort at Stony Creek settlement. John Wolfe married Elizabeth, one of the original Cornwell girls, and they later migrated "west" to Kentucky, like their older kinsmen. One of their sons was Henry Wolfe, born Oct. 18, 1786, and he married Lucy Grigsby about 1813.

Lucy was born Oct. 23, 1794, and some of her descendants think she may have been a sister of Wm. Grigsby Jr. of Orange County, Ind. Lucy Grigsby Wolfe died in that county April 23, 1839, and her husband died there June 20, 1855. But their deaths occurred so long before the first county histories of Indiana were published that Lucy's relationship to some of the other families was forgotten and not recorded in print. It was one of the above Henry Wolfe's sisters, "Polly" who was the wife of Jacob Cornwell. The Cornwell, Grigsbys and Wolfes were intermarried every-which-way with the neighboring families of Trinkle, Lewis, Wible and Strange, around Paoli and Livonia, Ind., - much the same as some of the Sullivan County families of Brewer, Turman, Dodd, Cushman, Gray, Bosstick, etc., were intermarried around Graysville and Big Spring in Turman Township a century ago.

Some of the Cornwells were in Kentucky before it became a state. In the First Census of the U.S. in 1790, there were listed in Mason County, Ky., John and Thomas Cornwell. In nearby Shelby County, Ky., the records show that one Ann Cornwell and Enoch Flemming were married April 30, 1799. The Wm. Cornwell-Mary Swann family resided somewhere near Louisville prior to moving in 1834 to the neighborhood of their Grigsby (and other) relatives near Paoli, Ind.

As stated before, the first two of Wm. Cornwell's 10 children were born in Maryland. They were James, born July 16, 1795, and Anna, born Feb. 5, 1796. The next two were born in Virginia - Edith, about 1799, and Peter on Jan. 18, 1802. The others were all born in Kentucky - Phoebe, about 1805; Wm. Jr., 1807; Edward Feb. 29, 1809; Bayless, Nov. 25, 1811; Mary, 1815; and Burwell Harrison Cornwell, born July 3, 1819.

The latter became a prominent citizen of Terre Haute, Ind., in his adult life, according to the 1891 History of Vigo County by H.C. Bradsby.

An Early Postmaster - The youngest son of the William Cornwell-Mary Swann family was Burwell Harrison Cornwell, who was born in Kentucky July 3, 1819, and who later became a resident of Terre Haute, Ind., as mentioned last week.

The History of Orange County tells that "during B.H. Cornwell's boyhood, around 1834 when he was 15, his parents moved to near Paoli, Indiana, from Jefferson County, Ky."

On Aug. 10, 1841, B.H. Cornwell was married at Vincennes, Ind., to Caroline S. Brokaw, who was born Aug. 2, 1823. She was a daughter of Henry P. Brokaw, a native of New Jersey, and his wife, nee Sally Ruble. (Sally's father was another of Gen. Harrison's soldiers who fought at Tippecanoe in 1811.)

Caroline and Burwell Harrison Cornwell moved to Terre Haute where in 1855 - exactly 100 years ago! - Mr. Cornwell was appointed postmaster, as related on Page 714 of the Vigo County History by Bradsby. Postmaster Cornwell died in September, 1869, in his 51st year.

According to his last will, which was dated Aug. 16, Mr. Cornwell left three daughters - Sallie H., wife of Alanson Gates Austin; Mary C., wife of Dr. L.H. Bartholomew; and Annie C., wife of Capt. W.B. Wheeler. The will was probated Oct. 12, 1869 (Bk. 1, p. 380, Vigo County Records.)  The widow, Mrs. Caroline Cornwell died Nov. 2, 1898.

The old Vigo history also related that A.G. Austin was born Feb. 16, 1836, and died Aug. 3, 1917. He was the son of Albert Bennett Austin and Jane Elizabeth Hannah.

The names and birthdates of the other nine children of Wm. and Mary (Swan) Cornwell were listed last week. To complete this portion of the Cornwell story, here are brief details of the lives of these nine older brothers and sisters of the early postmaster, B.H. Cornwell:

The oldest brother, James Cornwell, was married to a Miss Bennett. James was a wagonmaker a Paoli, Ind. In the 1850 Census, the enumerator wrote quaintly that Mr. Cornwell was born "in Meraland." His first wife died before 1850, for in the census records his second wife was listed as "Polly, age 34," and the family states that she was a widow, Mrs. Trinkle. Living with the James Cornwell family in 1850, was a boy named Jonathon Trinkle, age 9, probably Polly's son by her previous marriage. The other children in the census list were Julianne Cornwell, born 1824, in Kentucky; Miranda, born 1826; James Jr., born 1828. Family data indicates there was also Arlie R. Cornwell, who died in 1849 at the age of 12; and Rebecca. The father, James Cornwell Sr. , died May 22, 1867 in Orange County, Ind.

The family of Wm. Cornwell's eldest daughter, Anna, who was the wife of Wm. Grigsby Jr., has been mentioned previously. To correlate today's "Cornwell" sketch into what has already been published, we might reiterate that Anna was the mother of Mary Grigsby, who married John Van Cleave Wible in Orange County, then came to Sullivan County in 1842 to establish a home in Turman Township, where they remained the rest of their lives and reared a large and talented family. Four other of Anna Cornwell Girgsby's children also became early residents of Sullivan County.

The third child of Wm. Cornwell Sr. was Edith, born in Virginia about 1799. She was married to James Bennett March 9, 1817. He was likely a brother of the first wife of James Cornwell (above, brother of Edith.)  All we have been able to learn about James Bennetts is that they "moved to Louisiana."

The fourth child of Wm. Cornwell was Peter, who in adult life was a "hatter" at Paoli, Ind. He was married in 1836 to Mary Hart, born Dec. 8, 1820. They had ten children, six of whom died young. One son, Thomas J. Cornwell, was killed in the Civil War at the age of 18, serving in Co. 4, 66th Reg't., Indiana Volunteers. Records of the Old Town Cemetery at Paoli show that the father, Peter, died Oct. 3, 1878; and Mary, the mother died shortly before, on Sept. 8, 1878

The fifth child, Phoebe Cornwell, was first married to a Mr. McIntosh, and then to Isaac J. Rigney. The latter was born in 1798 in Surry County, N.C. and died in 1839 in Indiana. He was a son of Wm. Rigney (1768-1821) and Amariah Potter Rigney, pioneers who entered land in Orange County, Ind., in 1813. Isaac J. had a brother John Rigney, who married Ruth Wible; and a sister, Polly C. Rigney, who married Samuel Wible.

The children of Isaac J. and Phoebe Cornwell Rigney were Amaraish, who married Wm. Warren, Feb. 3, 1848; Amanda born 1830; Phoebe, born 1832, married Barry Strange; Elizabeth J., whose age was given as "16" in the 1850 Census; John born 1836, who married Caroline Marshall and lived in Illinois; and Isaac Newton Rigney, (1838-1927) whose wife was Nancy Jane West (1848-1922).

William Cornwell Jr., the sixth child of Wm. and Mary Cornwell, was married Jan. 6, 1830, in Orange County, Ind., to Matilda Johnson. Both were born in Kentucky in 1807. Their children listed in the 1850 Census were Jane C., age 16; Sarah M., 12; Martha E., 9; and Elizabeth, 5.

The next son of Wm. Cornwell Sr. was Edward, who was first married Oct. 5, 1831, to Nancy Johnson. the Orange County Census listed their children and ages in 1850 as follows: Mary E., 17; James S., 15; Wm. B., 13; a second Burwell Harrison Cornwell, age 11; Lemirah J., 8; Edward H., 5; and Nancy C., age 2. The mother died in 1886, and Mr. Cornwell then married a Bayliss. He died Dec. 31, 1893.

The eighth child of William Sr. was Bayliss Cornwell, born Nov. 25, 1811. He died single at the age of 17.

The last daughter was Mary Cornwell, who first married John L. Kirby. They had a daughter who married a Van Cleave boy, and a son, James Kirby. Records state that Mary had a second husband whose last name was Thomas. Mary died Jan. 20, 1901.

Since the youngest son, Postmaster Cornwell of Terre Haute, had a nephew also named Burwell Harrison Cornwell - and inasmuch as "Harrison" was a name given to various other Cornwell kinsmen - it seems likely that they were descendants of the very early Harrison and Burwell families of Virginia. Here are a few clues for further research:

Major Lewis Burwell (1621-1658) came from England about 1640 and settled on Carter's Creek in Gloucester County, Va. He married Lucy, the daughter of Capt. Robert Higginson. Their son, Lewis Burwell Jr., in 1672 married Abigail, daughter of Anthony and Martha (Bacon) Smith. (Martha was a sister of Nathaniel Bacon, according to the Compendium of American Genealogy).

One of the children of Lewis and Abigail Burwell was Elizabeth, baptized in 1677. She became the wife of Benjamin Harrison "of Berkeley," who was Speaker of the House of Burgesses in 1705. This was the original union of Burwell and Harrison families in America. There were several Benjamins in the distinguished Harrison family, but this one who married Elizabeth Burwell lived from 1673 to 1710.

Among their sons was Col. Benjamin Harrison (1693-1745), whose wife was Ann, daughter of Robert "King" Carter. (He was nicknamed "king" because he was one of the largest landholders in Virginia - literally a king!)

Col. Benjamin and Ann Harrison were the parents of Benjamin Harrison who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and they were the grandparents of Gen. Wm. Henry Harrison, Governor of the Indiana Territory 1801-13, and ninth president of the U.S.

Lewis and Abigail Smith Burwell also had a son, Lewis Jr. (1684-1744) who married Lucy Armistead, daughter of Col. John Armistead of Gloucester County, Va. One of the sons of Lewis Jr. was named Armistead Burwell (1718-1754) who lived in Mecklenburg County, Va. This is another typical example of how the early families invariably gave the maiden name of the mother to one of the sons.

In a recent study of the Nash family of Virginia and Indiana, we mentioned Armistead Nash, born in Haddon Township, Sullivan County, in 1837. Research probably would reveal that his name came from this same pioneer Armistead family. The first immigrant of that name in Gloucester County in Virginia was John Armistead (1635-1698) who was high sheriff there in 1675 and a Burgess in 1685. His wife was Judith Robinson.

Gloucester County, home of the above-mentioned Carters, Burwells, Harrisons and Armisteads, is located on the Chesapeake Bay, just across the York River from historic Yorktown. It was one of the mother counties of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In this Grigsby-Cornwell series, we have also seen how the Bayless (with various spellings of Bayliss, Baylies, etc.) kept cropping up. Bayless was another of the earliest Colonial families. In 1635, John Bayless (1617-1682) came from England to the Bermuda Islands, thence on to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1654. Ten years later he purchased 200,000 acres from the Indians, where Newark, Paterson and Passaic, New Jersey, now stand, later deeding the same to Gov. Philip Carteret of New Jersey. So it is evident that there have been Bayless families in America for more than 300 years. The wife of John Bayless was a woman named Rebecca, according to tradition.

Today's column completes the story of the Cornwells and some of their kinsmen, inasmuch as our primary purpose is to relate family histories only from the time of an immigrant ancestor down to the days when the first county histories of America were published. County and township histories were first compiled around the time of the Civil War and onward to about 1884. . . .

Cornwell Family Cemetery - Stampers Creek Township, Section 12, T1N, R1E abandoned - Peter Cornwell, born in Virginia and married in Kentucky, went to Kentucky and then came to Orange County, Indiana in 1815. This farm where he settled belongs to some of his descendants. For many years this was called the A.J. Pickens farm, Mr. Pickens having married Nancy Cornwell. There are perhaps 10 graves in this neglected plot, only one of which has an inscription. The stone is broken and leans against a tree, which as grown up in the group of graves. The well cut inscriptions is viz:
