Berry, Ellen & David Berry. Early Ohio Settlers: Purchasers of Land in Southeastern Ohio, 1800-1840, Baltimore, OH: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1984
A complete alphabetical listing of original purchasers of land sold by or from the Marietta Land Office, Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, under the Land Act of 1800, is much needed by genealogists researching the settlement of the newly-opened territory. This book should satisfy such a need. The area covers twelve present counties of southeastern Ohio, which was one of the first staging areas in the territory for pioneers seeking farm land at low prices. . . .
Originally, the land was to be sold by entire sections, but this was too much, even for speculators. Congress authorized the sale of 1,780,000 acres at a price of approximately ten-twelve cents per acre to a group of wealthy New Englanders who had formed an organization known as the Ohio Company of Associates - not be confused with the earlier company made up of Virginians. When the purchase was made in 1787, it was for 964,288 acres. The first group of settlers came to Ohio in 1788 and founded the town of Marietta in April of that year. . . .
This index contains the names of the purchasers, date of purchase, place of residence and section of the purchased land. Other information such as the exact portion of the section is not given. This omitted information also includes second purchasers and . . . relinquishments. The reader is advised to consult the original volumes for additional information. In some instances the reader will find the designation "DL" under the heading "Section." "DL" stands for Donation Lot and the parcel of land so listed is in an area essentially surrounding Washington County, Ohio. The Donation Lands were set aside as a buffer zone in which individual lots were to be given to those people who were willing to settle on this land and provide barriers between the Indians and the settlers in Washington County.
A few words of caution. First, no attempt has been made to correct obvious misspellings. . . . This means the same person might be listed as buying several parcels of land, even on the same day, and does not mean that we have duplicated names. Also, on rare occasions two or more men were listed as partners buying the same land. Each of these is listed in the index but not together as partners. Only close examination of the [original] volumes will show this.
Book includes a set of maps showing surveys of Ohio range and township lines.

Donation Tract Lands were given by the Ohio Land Company to males (18 and over) who promised to carry a gun and protect the approaches to the Marietta settlement from Indians. Each tract was for 100 acres in some particular instances a man received more than one allotment. The period covered from 1790 to 1820 when the Indians were still to be feared.  . . .
These 100 acre plots are laid out along the creeks or near the settlements and are coded according to land locations.
