1767 - December 3 - Will of William Towson Jr. 

In the Name of God Amen. On the 3d day of December 1767, I William Towson Junior of Baltimore County in the Province of Maryland being very sick and weak in Body, but of Perfect mind and memory thanks be unto God therefore calling to mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for  all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament:  That is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the Hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried in Decent Christian Burial at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty power of God. And as touching my Worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to Bless me with in this Life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

Imprimus, I give and Bequeath to my Dearly beloved Wife Frances all my Estate both real and Personal if it should happen that she is not Pregnant, But if should Happen otherwise my Will is that the Child when out of its minority should Enjoy half of my Estate both Real and Personal, I do hereby appoint my friend William Govane and my Dear Wife Frances to be sole-Executor of this my last Will and Testament.  In Witness whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal the the day and year above Written.

Signed, Sealed, published, pronounced Declared by the Said William Towson Junr. as his Last Will and Testament in Presence of James Leaken (?), Henry Stevenson, son of Edwd. 

On the back of the foregoing Will was thus Written Vizt

Feb'y 8th 1768. Came James Leakin and Henry Stevenson son of Edward the two subscribing Witnesses to the foregoing Will and and being only and solemnly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God depose and say that they and each of them saw the Testator William Towson Junr. sign the Instrument of Writing as and for his Last Will and Testament that at the Time of his so doing he was to the best of their apprehensions of sound and Disposing mind and memory that they and each of them Subscribed their names as Witnesses to the said Will in the Presence of the Said Testator an at his bequest

Sworn before W. Young, D. Comly, Balt. County  Examined.

The Towson Family is the subject of Winifred Levering Holman Dodge's ms. "Towson Family of Maryland," MHS.

Towson, (---) (1), unnamed progenitor, is stated by Dodge to have had three sons: Charles b. ca. 1680; William b. ca. 1685; and Thomas b. ca. 1688 (Dodge).

Towson, Charles (2), s. of (---) (1), was b. ca. 1680, and gave his age as 39 in 1718 (Chancery Record PL #3, p. 582, at Hall of Records).

Towson, William (3), s. of (---) (1), is stated by Dodge to have d. after 1715, to have m. Catherine Allen, and to have at least two ch.: Darius b. c. 1710; Dorcas, b. c. 1715, m. Henry Sater (Dodge, offers no documentation).

Towson, Thomas (4), s. of (---) (1), was b. 1688 and d. by 11 Nov. 1728; m. c. 1710 Sarah (---) who m. as her 2nd husb. one Duncan Coleman; admin. bond on his est. was posted 27 July 1728 by admnx. Sarah Towson with Thomas Ford, Charles Robinson, Thomas Sheredine, and Richard Caswell; his est. was in v. on 11 Nov. 1728 by Luke Stansbury and Thomas Matthews and val. at £184.9.2; John and Mary Tipton signed as kin; Sarah Towson was admnx; est. was admin. 16 April 1731 by Sarah and her 2nd husb. Duncan Coleman; in March 1733/4 Coleman posted bond, with Thomas Towson their share of their father's est.; on 7 Nov. 1734 of his wife Sarah; Thomas and Sarah had iss.: Abraham; Thomas; William; Darius; Joseph; also pos. Richard who m. Tabitha Rutledge on 26 Dec. 1758 (3:85; 14:215; 30:191, 192; 51:79; 74:135; Dodge).

Towson, Darius (5), s of William (3) is stated by Dodge to have been b. c. 1710; may be the Darius who had iss: William, b. 23 Jan. 1735 (133:50).

Towson, Abraham (6) s. of Thomas (4) and Sarah, d. by 9 June 1752 when admin. bond was posted by James Carey with Thomas Norris; m. Elizabeth Mahone on 1 Jan. 1745; his est. was admin. by James Carey on 18 Sept. and 21 Nov. 1754; the first admin. acct. contained an entry for expenses for "burying the wife of the deceased;" Abraham and Elizabeth had two children who chose their uncle William as their guardian; left iss.; Mary; Dorcas (4:224, 240; 14:276; 40:19, 220; 133:158).

Towson, Thomas (7) s. of Thomas (4) and Sarah, was b. c. 1725 m. Elizabeth (---) and had iss.: (b. in St. Thomas Parish); Thomas b. 25 April 1752; Sarah b. 18 Jan. 1754; Joshua b. 18 Jan. 1756; Hannah b. 23 Oct. 1758; James b. 21 Sept. 1760; Shadrach b. 3 Sept. 1762 (134:36, 37).

Towson, William (8) s. of Thomas (4) and Sarah was b. c. 1712; d. in Balto. Co. in 1772; m. 1st on 24 Feb. 1735, Ruth Gott; m. 2nd c. 1740, Dinah Wilmot; in Nov. 1730 as orphan of Thomas Towson he chose Walter James as his guardian; in March 1743/4 was tried on a charge of fathering an illeg. ch.; in 1750 he was listed as owning 200 a. Vulcania; in April 1752 he bought part of Gunner's Range from Samuel Gott, to Isaac Risteau; d. leaving a will, 8 April 1772 - 1 Aug. 1772, naming w. Dinah and ch. Ezekiel, Abraham, Rachel w. of Thomas Bailey, John Thomas, Ruth w. of one Green, and Charles, also naming Ezekiel's dau. Ann granddau. Rachel Bailey of Rachel, Catherine w. of John Avery and her ch. William Towson Allen and Isaac Towson Avery; est. was admin. on 11 Feb. 1792 by exec. Thomas Bailey; he paid legacies to William Towson had "not been home in ten years," so his share was paid to Ezekiel, Charles and John; the wife of the exec. was pd. a share, and Isaac Towson was paid for the support of the ch. of Catherine Avery; William had two ch. by his 1st w.: Ezekiel, b. 28 Dec. 1736; Rachel m. Thomas Bailey on 26 Dec. 1750; (by 2nd w.): Catherine b. c. 1740 m. 1st (---) Allen, and 2nd John Avery; Abraham b. c. 1742; William Jr. b. c. 1743, d. 1767, m. Towson, Joseph (9) s. of Thomas (3) and Sarah may be the Joseph whose will was made 17 Jan. 1745, proved 5 March 1745, naming his w. Elizabeth, and directing that his unborn ch. was to be named Joseph if a boy and Elizabeth if a girl (111:218).

Hi there! I am also researching the Towson family and I'd love to connect. I can take my Towson branch back to the early 1800s but can't figure out my dude's parents, so I'm researching the other Towsons in the area to see if I can bridge the gap that way.
