Johan Hendrick Kalcklőser was born in Frankenthal (Rhineland Palatinate), Germany about 1696.(1)  Frankenthal is near Mannheim. Very little proof is available, at this time, concerning the early life of Johan Hendrick. However, it is probable that he joined the Seventh Day Baptists at an early age, since it has been recorded that he left Frankenthal at age 19 to join Alexander Mack's group in Schwarzenau (Wittgentstein),(2) due to religious persecution in the Frankenthal area. . . . 

In 1724, after the reading of the banns (three times at two-week intervals) or proclamations, Johan Hendrick and Anna Flys Layen were married on 28 February 1724.(4)  It is believed that all three sons were born of this union. Some time between the date of this marriage and the departure for Philadelphia in 1729, Anna Flys Layen probably died, since Johan Hendrick had a different wife, Agnes (Anna) Margaretha,(5) at the time of sailing from Rotterdam. (Alexander Mack, Jr. records that he knew "the two wives of Johan Hendrick.")(6) . . . 

The ship Allen arrived in Philadelphia on 15 September 1729.(7) Among the passengers were Johan Hendrick Kalcklőser with his family: his wife Agnes, sons Christophel (or Christopher), Jacob and Emanuel, and Christophel's wife, Maria Magdalena (Liesel).(8)
 
 Johan Hendrick and Agnes remained in Germantown until about 1739, when they joined the religious retreat at Ephrata in Lancaster County, where they remained until their deaths.(9)  Johan Hendrick died in 1748 at the age of 52, and Agnes died in 1758, according to the Ephrata Register.(10) 

This researcher has found little information on Christopher and Maria Magdalena.  . . .  

Jacob married (wife unknown) and had at least one child, Johan, born about 1740. . . . Johan, the son of Jacob, died in York County in 1804, leaving issue.(14) Nothing more is known about Jacob at this time.

Emanuel lived in Germantown and Philadelphia for some years. According to Alexander Mack, Jr. Emanuel married Catherina (surname unknown).(15)  She was probably Catherina Isabella; she is recorded as Isabella, Widow of Emanuel, in the York County Orphan's Court Dockets, when she presents her two daughters, Susannah (aged 8 years) and Katherina (aged 6 years), to be apprenticed on 11 June 1753.(16)

The relationship between these early Kalcklősers in Eastern Pennsylvania and John and Abraham in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania has not yet been proven, but it is believed that one or possibly two generations separates them and that a connection will be found.  This researcher also believes the Daniel Colclaysier found in Frederick County, Maryland in the 1790 census for that county(17) may be a brother to John and Abraham of Westmoreland County. This belief was strengthened when a John Colkleaser was found on a Muster Roll for Frederick County dated 1767,(18) and several deeds for Abraham of Westmoreland County were found in Washington County, Maryland.(19)

In 1992 this researcher found a land warrant for John of Westmoreland County at the Pennsylvania Archives, Harrisburg, PA, which stated John had been on his land in South Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland County, since March 1769.(20)  The date of the warrant was 1785.

John died between March (date of will) and May (date of probate) 1790, leaving a will which names his children (Abraham, Jacob, Daniel, Susannah, and Mary), his wife Mary, and his brother Abraham.(21) . . . 

Another assumption which has confounded many Colclasure researchers is the assignment of yet another son to John and Mary, that of David William, who was in Washington County, Indiana at the same period Jacob and Abraham (proven sons of John and Mary) were there.

David also lived in Westmoreland County, and is a documented Revolutionary War soldier in that county. However, there is no proof at this time that he was a son of John and Mary. . . . 

In bringing this paper to a close, two other misconceptions must be mentioned.  Some researchers have attributed two and three marriages to Jacob, son of John and Mary.  According to the Westland Monthly Meeting (Quaker), Eleanor Dennen Colclasure and Abigail Dennen Colclasure were dismissed 11 August 1787 for "marrying out of unity."(24)  The first child of Jacob and Eleanor -- Mary -- was born 23 January 1786. Eleanor was divorcing Jacob in Washington County, Indiana at the time of his death, 10 November 1822.(25)  Since Jacob is believed to have been born about 1764, he would have been about 21 years of age at the time of his marriage to Eleanor. Reasonable logic would indicate there was not time for a second and/or third marriage.

The second misconception concerns Rachel Colclasure, second daughter of Jacob and Eleanor. . . . Several researchers have reported two marriage for Rachel. . . Rachel married Jesse Finley, son of David Finley and Elizabeth Mounce Finley of Orange County, Indiana, on 20 July 1815 in Washington County, Indiana.(26)  They left Indiana for Missouri before 1827, staying in Missouri until after 1840, at which time they migrated to Texas. Rachel probably died between 1850 and 1860, and was probably buried in either Hunt or Hopkins County, Texas.(27)  Jesse returned to Missouri and was living in the home of his son David in the 1860 census of Dunklin County, Missouri.(28)  He probably died between 1860 and 1870, since he does not appear in the 1870 census. Rachel and Jesse had 13 children, recorded in the Bible of this researcher's great grandmother, Elizabeth Ellen Finley, who married Merit Branom in Lamar County, Texas in 1842. . . .

Revolutionary War Service - Served with the Rangers of the Frontiers (1778-1783). Lieutenant in Captain John VanMeter's Company of Militia, 4th Westmoreland Battalion, W.C. Benjamin Davis' Company. Called out for running the line between Pennsylvania and Virginia. Served June 6 to June 14, 1782 (Huntington Township).  Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, Vol. 23, Fifth Series, Vol. 4, pp. 433 & 738; Sixth series Vol. 2, p. 288

Died: 5-2-1855, aged 86 years, 4 months and 16 days. Buried in Old Mill Creek Cemetery Baptist Church, organized 1-15-1822. Church and cemetery are located on land that David Colglazier entered 1811, 1814 and other land at other times, and on the homestead on which he lived during his time in Indiana (1810-1855).

Tombstone: David Colglazier died May 2, 1855, age 86 years, 4 months and 16 days. The gave beside him has this record: Christena Colglazier died Augst 12, 1856, in her 84th year.  

Married: 1788/1789 Kentucky, to Cynthiana Christena (Cynthia) May, whome we have good reason to believe was the daughter of William May, early settler in Kentucky.  Cynthia died 8-12-1856 in her 84th year. Born 1772.

David Colglazier was, without doubt in my mind, the son of John & Mary Colglazier (Colazer) who were living in Westmoreland County, Pa. where John left a will, dated March 29,1 790, recorded May 16, 1790, in which he names wife Mary. Children Daniel, Abraham, Jacob, [daughters] Susanna and Mary. Wife Mary and brother Abraham Colglazier named as the executors of the estate. Vol. I; 101; 341, Pennsylvania Genealogical Society. . . . 

In 1788, David Colglazier was in Jefferson County Kentucky. In 1801, his brother, John was still in Kentucky and in 1826, 27, 30 one John Colglazier was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, and probably a son of John from Pa. and a nephew of Lieut. David Colglazier, and it is possible it was John, the brother of Lieut. David Colglazier.

By 1790 David Colglazier became a first settler in Monroe Township, Clermont County, Ohio, near Cincinnati, at the mouth of Indian Creek in southern Clermont. History of Clermont, Ohio, page 382.  According the 1850 census records of Washington County, several of David Colglazier's children, beginning with John, the oldest child, were born in Ohio near Cincinnati and Covington, but in Ohio. 

By the year 1810, 1811 and 1812, David Colglazier was entering land in Indiana, in Washington and Orange Counties. . . . 

This name now spelled as "Colglazier" has been spelled in many ways in old records, such as Colazer, Colclazer, Colilazer and Colclazure. I have know many persons wearing this name who spelled it Colglazier and pronounced it as if it were spelled Colazer and Colclazure, etc.  Now, more often the name is pronounced just as it is spelled, with either a short o or a long o in the first syllable. 

Family tradition says that David Colglazier . . . was born on the present site of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, near Old Fort Pitt; that he left Pennsylvania about 1790 or earlier and emigrated to Ohio where he lived in a block house on the present site of Cincinnati until 1810 or about when he removed to Washington County, Indiana and settled at Beck's Mill or Beck's Settlement near Mill Creek. It says also, that he lived for two years at Covington, Kentucky after he left Ohio and before he settled in Washington County, Indiana. Tradition also says that the family of David Colglazier came from the state of Maryland to Pennsylvania. The Centennial History of Washington County, Indiana by Stevens says, "The founder of the Colglazier family in this county was David Colglazier, a native of Delaware County, Pennsylvania - born 1764, and his wife Cynthia May, a native of Delaware County, Pennsylvania - born 1762." Stevens states that the family is of German origin. Others who made search for material for publication say the family came from Alsace-Lorraine, on the French border. A college professor born and reared in Holland, when he heard the name, remarked, "The name is French."  A woman born and reared in Alsace-Lorraine but of a German family said, "The name is not German, it is a combination of French and German and means a cutter of glass." Family tradition says the family settled in Maryland and later some of the family emigrated to Western Pennsylvania .

Will of John Colglazier or Colazer. Dated March 29, 1790; recorded May 18, 1790, names wife - Mary. Children Daniel, Abraham, Jacob, Susannah and Mary. Wife and brother Abraham Colglazier named as Executors of the estate. Witnesses Peter Light, Alexander McClean and James Anderson, Vol. I: 101 from Pennsylvania Genealogical Society.

Some think David Colglazier was a son of Abraham Colglazier who was named as brother Abraham Colglazier, executor of the above will.

If tradition or memories of older generations can be considered, and in this instant it sees such should be taken into consideration when the names of the brothers of David Colglazier were given with no knowledge of the above will whatever, it would seem that David was a son of the John Colglazier and wife Mary, of the Will of 1790. In 1790 David and John (not named in the will above, were in Kentucky, as records show, so David left Pennsylvania earlier than 1790 because he was in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1788. See records in the manuscript. Before 1788 David was in Kentucky. In 1790 his son John, was born in Ohio. . . . 

In Brumbaugh's German Baptists there is record of an early Baptist minister from whom this family may have descended, some think. So far, there is no established proof of such connection. This early Baptist minister is recorded as - 

John Henry Kalckglasser (Johannes Hendrick Kalckglasser) b. 1695 in South Germany, d. 1748 in Ephrata, Pa., exact date of death 2-29-1748. Ephrata Cloisters, Pennsylvania. His wife's given name was Anna Margareta who died in 1758.

In 1715 this man was preaching.  In 1729 he became a religious refugee in Europe and he and his family, with Mack and thirty other families came to Philadelphia on the ship Allen, thence to Germantown, Pa., where a faltering church was revived. Mack was the pastor until his death then John Henry Kalckglasser, the oldest in church membership, became the pastor. Later this man, with others, pulled away from the Baptist church and went to Ephrata, Pa., and formed a settlement and a church of their own, which declared against war, divorce and debt. There he was known as Brother Joel and came to be known as Joel Kalckglasser. He owned land in Old Germantown while he lived there. 

It appears that John Henry Kalckglasser had children by names of Emanuel, Christopher, Agnes and Jacob. In this instance the meaning of the name is said to be "One Family."

The spelling of the name given here suggests Dutch origin. However, there is no proof of connection between the family of Colazer, later found in western Pa. and this family who spelled the name as Kalckglasser, or so spelled in records, which may be just another way that some person making a record thought the name should be spelled. The name Colglazier is simple to pronounce and easy to spell when understood; the glazier part is pronounced as if spelled glacier (a body of ice).

Jacob / Jake Colglazier (son of John & Mary Colglazier of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, brother of Lieutenant David Colglazier.)

Married: 1st - name unknown, 2nd - Eleanor (--?--) who was mother of at least one child.  Eleanor was seeking a divorce when Jacob died. 
 
Named in the will of his father, 1790, Huntington twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. Taxed in Jefferson Co., Kentucky, 1797-99. Taxed in Henry Co., Kentucky for 50 acres and stock, on Drennon's Creek, 1802-1809.

Oct. 4, 1810 to 1822 Jacob Colglazier and his sons-in-law were living on Honey Creek between Hardinsburg and Fredericksburg, Indiana, Washington Co., Posey Twp.

The McDowell family is legion and it is not strange that in the extreme emphasis placed on Colonel Joseph McDowell, of Quaker Meadows (1756-1801), and his nephew Captain Joseph, of Pleasant Gardens (1758-1795), that another Joseph McDowell living in Guilford County should have been overlooked.  The United States census of 1790 for North Carolina records two Josephs as "Heads of Families" in Burke county and the Joseph McDowell of Guilford county, who is thus registered:

The first land record so far discovered shows that this Joseph McDowell held:

"A tract of land containing two hundred and fifty acres lying and being in our county of Guilford on the waters of the south side Reedy Fork of Haw River beginning at a Black Gum in William Scotts line . . . near a branch running thence west crossing two branches one hundred sixty poles to a post oak thence north crossing a branch to Abraham Whitesides corner black oak thence . . . in John Whites line . . . to his corner stake thence . . . in William Scotts line . . . Record of deeds, Guilford county, NC, Vol. 2, page 188." (Dated Mar 1, 1780).

There is also the following purchase of land:

"This Indenture Made this fourth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety four between Thos. Morgan of the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina of the one part and Joseph McDowell of the state and county aforo of the other part witnesseth that the Sd Thos. Morgan for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifteen pounds hard money of said state hath . . . given granted bargained and sold . . . unto the Sd. Joseph McDowell . . . that tract and parcel of land . . . on the waters of the alemance containing  two hundred acres more or less beginning at a stone near the bank of Burch creek on Wm. Peaseleys line . . . to a black oak marked Andrews corner . . . written signed sealed and delivered in presence of us

This second tract of land, however, was purchased by his son, Joseph McDowell, Jr., as Joseph, Sr., died in the late spring of 1797. The will of Joseph McDowell Sr., is especially unique as Joseph Jr., who was one of the executors made a separate codicil listing all household articles etc. He also retained the vouchers and court orders, which his son, Rev. James McDowell, carefully preserved.

This James McDowell was a twin brother of Elizabeth McDowell, born in Guilford county, North Carolina on June 5, 1797. When two years of age he was taken with the family to Tennessee. Enthused with the new pioneer spirit of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, he attended college at Louisville and obtained a degree. With the opening of the new church college at Princeton, Ky., in 1828, he entered and took a course in divinity. On September 12, 1830, he married Kitty Ann Rawlings, a young girl who had been carefully nurtured in a well-to-do Kentucky home.  Immediately after their marriage the bride and groom left for the prairies of central Illinois. They traveled on horseback with the featherbed over the saddle and the dutch oven, axe and saw and tinder in the saddlebags. Soon after their arrival in Tazewell county,a Cumberland Presbyterian church was established in Aaron Orendorff's place on November 28, 1830. Aaron Orendorff, who had married his sister Martha McDowell, had been among the first pioneers into the county from Robertson county, Tennessee, in 1827, and had been instrumental in urging him to come.

Through the permission of James McDowell's granddaughter, Mrs. H.P. Anderson of Terra Bella, California, the author has had the permission to make photostat copies of these documents which supplement the state records.

The following is the will of Joseph McDowell, Sr.

"In the name of God amen - I Joseph McDowell sen'r of the county of Guilford this third day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven made and publish this my last will and testament, in manner following that is to say.

1st Item - That all my debts be collected and my creditors all paid off.

Item 2nd - I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife her bed and bed chest and her wearing clothes and the third of the land, with the half of the mantion house with my daughter, Mary.

Item 3rd - Also I give unto my beloved son Joseph McDowell, Jun., the sum of five shillings.

Item 4th - Also I give unto my beloved daughter Elizabeth Duff the sum of five shillings 

Item 5th - Also I give unto my beloved daughter Hannah Ferguson the sum of five shillings.

Item 6th - Also I give unto my beloved daughter Mary McDowell her own be and bed clothes that she made use of at Mr. Caldwels and her saddle and bridle and all her wearing apparel and her Bible and my wife is to have her third of the property and the remainder to my daughter Mary. 

Item 7th - Also I give and bequeath unto my beloved son James McDowell (if alive) all my late son Johns clothes and also the one half of said land and if my son James never returns my daughter Mary is to enjoy the whole of said land forever.  

And I hereby make and ordain my beloved son Joseph McDowell and my worthy friend Hernce McKeern Executors of this my last will and testament . . . "

Joseph McDowell, Jr., married Martha White, only child of John White, who lived on an adjoining farm. Robert White Sr., father of John White, the McDowells, Boyds and Paisleys moved from Scotland to North Ireland. John White and his wife moved from North Ireland with the McDowells, Paisleys and Boyds to North Carolina. One of the McDowells moved off of his farm or plantation, which was near the battle ground of Cowpens, SC.  Some records state that Martha McDowell, Joseph's oldest daughter was born near Cowpens, South Carolina, in 1790. An old desk which in the course of time was carried to California bears the initials J.W., hand carved, and the date 1766, on the center door. A blue and white counterpane woven by Jane or Jean White in Ireland also bears the date 1766 and the double initials woven in J.W.  Both the desk and the counterpane are said to have been brought over on the boat with them when they came from Ireland.

A New Testament, printed in Ireland in 1762, bears Jane Gowdy White's signature dated September 4, 1765. It also contains the following records:

Family records seem to indicate that Joseph McDowell, Jr., migrated to Williamson county, Tennessee, in 1799, but his mother-in-law, Jane Gowdy White remained in Guilford county, on the home farm, until the farm was sold in 1801. . . .

The McDowells seem to have been closely associated with James McGready, he famous Presbyterian divine. McGready's parents had been early immigrants into Guilford county, but they sent James back to western Pennsylvania to be educated for the ministry. He boarded with Judge McDowell, in Cannonsburg, and studied Latin under the keen intellectual thinker, Dr. John McMillan. McGready began his career by teaching in a neighboring school in Pennsylvania, but by 1793 he was with his parents, Guilford county, living near Greensboro. The evangelist fe[r]vor of the young minister attracted large crowds of people.  Yet among the rougher element there was a good deal of opposition and the story is told that a letter was written in blood advising him to leave the county.With a high missionary resolve to carry the vital religion into the west he departed for southern Kentucky in 1796. By 1800 he had established the three congregations of Gasper River, Muddy River and Red River.  Enormous crowds flocked to the Red River church, in June 1800, some with tents and food. The next month the first camp meeting in Kentucky was held at Gasper church. (Records of W.A. Provine, Tennessee Historical Society.) . . . 

One family record states that Joseph McDowell and his half-brother, James McDowell, moved from Carolina first to Williamson county, Tennessee, but soon afterwards moved up to the northern part of Robertson county, six or seven miles south of Adairville, Ky. It is very possible that their interest in the Presbyterian movement and the dynamic personality of M'Gready led the McDowells to remove from Williamson county to the Kentucky border, shortly after they had gone into Tennessee from Guilford county, for they settled near the Red River and became active members. A receipt for church dues signed by M'Gready has been preserved in the family archives. 

As early as 1804, extant land records show that Joseph McDowell, Jr., was living in Robertson county, although he maintained his land in Williamson county, at least until 1814 . . . 

Large military grants were taken out by Joseph McDowell of Burke county in Kentucky, after the American Revolution, but the majority of the land records in Tennessee, especially after 1800, refer to the Joseph of our line. . . . 

The records of Robertson county [TN] so far have failed to reveal the will of Joseph McDowell, Jr., but do give the will of his son Joseph, who died in 1822. But he evidently gave the following tract of land to his daughter, who in turn sold it to her brother Joseph:

This Indenture made the 26th of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-two between Martha McDowell of the county of Robertson and State of Tennessee of the one part and Joseph McDowell of this county and state of the other part for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand fifty dollars in hand paid to the said Martha McDowell . . . a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and sixty-four acres lying and being in the County and state aforesaid on the south fork of the Red River . . . 

Martha had sold her brother Joseph this tract of land, evidently inherited from her father. But before the final arrangements had been completed he died. So when the will of this Joseph is presented in court they also complete the transfer for the benefit of his wife and family. . . .

Robert & Elizabeth Wilson came by flat boat to Indiana from Pittsburgh, PA. Robert came first in 1815 and returned to Pennsylvania to bring Elizabeth and their infant daughe rMary Ann Wilson in 1816.  Nine children were born in Posey County, Indiana.  

Who were Robert's siblings?  Did any of them migrate to Indiana?

William Cornwell was born in Wales, England in approximately 1615. With hope in hear and a definite plan in his mind, he came to America in 1635 and settled near the Rappahannock River in Virginia. William Cornwell had a son named Peter who to the best of our knowledge was born around 1634. Peter Cornwell was the father of Charles Cornwell whose will is found in Prince William County, Virginia and was recorded in 1781. The will reads as follows:

I, Charles Cornwell, of Dettingen Parish, Prince William County . . . leaves to his daughter Mary and his son George, the whole of his estate. Appoints sons, Ezekiel and Francis executors. I have given to my married children, Anne Collie, Charles Cornwell, Suckey Cole, Lydia Crouch and my two sons mentioned as executors all the share of my estate intended for them in my lifetime, I leave them nothing at my death.
