1609, May 23 - a John Ellis was one of the grantees in the second charter of the Virginia Company.
1624 - VA - Davis/David Ellis came from Wales to Jamestown, VA prior to 1624. His wife's name was Margaret (-?-). Really early and fairly far south for our bunch in Stafford County. Came in the second supply of emigrants from England, and was one of the men sent by Captain Smith to build a house for King Powhatan at his favourite seat, Werowocomico, on York River.
1634 - VA, Henrico Shire created, south away from Stafford County
1638 - England - "Thomas Ellis, merchant, was born about 1638 and came to Rappahannock in the early 1660s. He met Thomas Harwar I about 1665 and remained in Virginia about a dozen years before returning to London.
In the earliest Virginia record of Thomas Ellis, dated 7 Nov. 1665, he witnessed the appointment of Edward Dale as attorney for Eliz. Edwards of Lancaster County. On 27 April 1677 'I Thomas Ellis Marcht. Now Resident of Middlesex but beng suddainely bound for England[,] have made in my Stead my truely welbeloved friend Mr. Nicholas Cock of Middlesex and Edward Thomas of the County of Rappa. . . . to be my lawfull Attorney . . . ;' one of the witnesses was Daniel Whitehorn (who witnessed Thomas Harwar I's will two decades later). It is not clear whether Ellis returned to Virginia. On 1 Jan. 1675/6 (during the civil crisis in Virginia) he had leased a sloop to John Saffin; it appears that Saffin either did not use it, or used it only for part of the lease term-anyway, it appears he refused to pay the agreed price. Ellis sued and the suit dragged on after his sudden return to England (it seems that Saffin even countersued); Middlesex court records do not state clearly whether Ellis appeared in person or by his attorneys. Later Ellis asked others to act as his attorneys: in 1696 Arthur Spicer of Richmond County sued the estate of George Haslewood for debt on Ellis' behalf and won; on 16 Oct. 1700 Thomas Ellis of London, merchant, made Leonard Hill his attorney for all debts.
Thus Ellis appears in Virginia records for about forty years from 1665, mostly in actions for commercial debts owed him. The last Rappahannock Valley document naming him is an appearance bond, dated 11 June 1703 and signed by James Edmondson and James Boughan, to permit James and Judith Edmondson (administrators of Phillip Parr) to appeal to the General Court a judgment of ￡7/0/6 in favor of Thomas Ellis." 1680s - VA, Rappahannock River valley - "Tobacco attracted merchants to the river (such as Thomas Bowler from York County; John Jeffries, Thomas Ellis and Heneage Robinson from London; John Saffin and Anthony Haywood from New England). At first mainly individual traders based in London collected the English tobacco imports. Merchants visited the Rappahannock valley a year, or a few years, at a time before returning home; or they empowered ships' captains to barter trade goods for tobacco. As falling prices and European wars made tobacco riskier the smaller merchants left the trade; larger London importers carried on the business and sent agents to Rappahannock." 1683 - Oct. 1 - VA, Henrico Co. - John Ellis, b. 1661 (above) settled on Peter's Creek, a branch of Tuckahoe Creek. He appears at Varina, county seat of Henrico on Oct. 1, 1683. He married Susannah and had eight children: John, William, Thomas, Henry, James, Joseph, Mary and Charles
1719 - June 12 -VA, Essex Co., - Jno. & Sarah Ellitts witness deed between John Long & John Morgan
1726 - Dec. 22 - VA, Middlesex Co. - Hezekiah Ellis b. 1680 wrote a will which was probated June 6, 1727. He named the following in the will:

1744 - Sep. 30 - VA, Stafford Co., Overwharton Parish - a John Ellis md. Sarah Berry - this is west of St. Paul's Parish up the Potomac River and part of the parish was in Prince William County. This could be (-?-) Ellis' son John's second marriage or possibly a grandson.
1745 - Aug. 31 - VA, Spotsylvania Co. - Robert Ellis wrote a will which was probated Oct. 1, 1745, witnesses: John Thornton, John Hughes, John Willis. Leg. brother William Ellis.
1766 - May 10 - VA, Spotsylvania Co. - William Ellis wrote a will which was probated August 4, 1766
