Leonard Cagle Gurley |
1823 Leonard Cagle
Gurley, in North Carolina, the son of William & Polly Gurley, died 1870 in
Wayne Co. IL. The family migrated from North
Carolina to Tennessee circa 1830 and to Pope Co. Illinois ca. 1838. Leonard married 1) Nancy Warren in Massac
Co. IL. They had moved to Wayne Co. IL
ca. 1851 where Leonard bought property in Berry Twp. They had 6 children. Leonard ran a store, a gathering place for
the farmers in the vicinity. Men would
box for entertainment. During one match,
Leonard was apparently beating his opponent when the man pulled a knife and cut
him severely in the abdomen. There was
no doctor nearby, so Nancy was said to have cleaned the wound and sewed it up. It was said that complications of this wound
caused his premature death at age 47. He
was frequently away from home, making trips to St. Louis for goods for the
store. He also ran a steam saw and grist
mill on his farm. After Nancy’s death, Leonard married 2) Susannah Morehead in
Massac Co., IL in 1857. The couple had five
children and divorced ca. 1868 when Leonard returned home to find Susannah in a
barn loft with another man. In 1869 shortly after the birth of their daughter Alice,
Leonard & Susannah remarried in Clay Co. IL. Leonard had a posthumous son, Leonard Cagle
Jr. born in 1871. Another family story
is that Leonard liked to drink and when drunk would through money into the
stove and laugh saying that he could easily make more money. Leonard is buried in Bailey Cemetery not far from where he lived.
