Research Log - December 2022

Using Elephind.com newspaper search engine I found the following items in the Fairplay Flume (Colorado) newspaper:

1915 - July 23 - Commissioner's Proceedings (column) - [bills allowed] - John Barr, work road 18 road district no. 3, $21.00

1923 -  October 12 -  Black Mountain News (column) - John Barr has been helping Mr. Corliss with his hay the past week.  Most of the hay is still in the shock on account of the rains.

1923 - October 12 - Commissioner's Proceedings (column) - Oct. 2, 1923 The Board of County Commissioners of Park County, Colorado met in regular session at 8 o'clock AM October 2, 1923 for the transaction of any and all business that may properly come before them. . . . The following bills were allowed . . . John Barr, jurors fees Hopkins case, $2.65.

1924 - March 7 - Black Mountain News (column) - Mrs. John Barr and little son Jackie left last week for Wayne county, Ill., where they will visit friends and relatives for a few months.

This is Ruby (Gurley) (Barr) Musteen and her son John Barr, Jr.  Ruby was the daughter of J.R. & Lou Emma (Speer) Gurley. She and her husband John Barr were married in Colorado Springs, CO in 1921, Jackie was born in 1922.  John & Ruby attempted to obtain

a homestead in Colorado, but were not successful. The couple divorced in 1932 and Jackie was given to John Barr's mother to raise.  Tragically, Jackie drowned at a CCC camp in Kettle Falls, WA in 1939 at age 17.

I emailed the Park County Historical Society and asked about the location of Black Mountain (which I could not locate on a map) in relation to Fairplay which I could find on a map and a gentleman sent me this image:

John Barr's homestead must have been near Black Mountain.

In working on William Thorne I convinced myself that Mary (Thorne) Denton was not actually a Thorne at all.  Her surname is not known and she has been shifted to a brick wall, see #617 Mary Denton.  This has led to the elimination of the Thornes, Livingstones and Booths from the tree / ahnentafel.

In researching William O'Dell I have come across an interesting note:
Such have been the descendants of William Odell, ancestor of the Odells in America. The only poet of record is Allen Odell, son of the head of Burma Shave, who originated the roadside jingles that catch motorists' eyes from coast to coast.

Samuel O'Dell b. 1663, d. 1720 - is he the son of Sarah (Vowels) O'Dell?  His birthdate routinely appears as 1663.  The marriage date given for William & Sarah (Vowels) O'Dell is given as 1665. Was William married prior to marrying Sarah?  Or is Samuel's birthdate just off . . .

Benjamin Barker Odell served as governor of New York from 1901 to 1905.

Samuel Odell was a pirate for Edward Teach better known as Blackbeard.  Samuel survived the naval battle off Ocracoke in which Blackbeard was killed in 1718.  Samuel was the only one of Blackbeard's men to win acquittal by the British Admiralty by convincing them that he had been a prisoner.

Moses Odell served as Congressman during the Civil War.

Samuel U.F. Odell was U.S. Consul General to the kingdom of Hawaii - a tough assignment.

Hiram Odell was a teacher at the first school John D. Rockefeller attended. Rockefeller visited him annually.

John Odell of Yonkers served as an iron monger for the U.S. Navy.  In 1775 he helped forge the Great West Point Chain defense system.

Rev. Jonathan Odell was a Tory propagandist who ended up in New Brunswick, Canada where he served as provincial secretary.

Rethinking the Robertson line:

  • Gen. 1 Wm. Robertson & Isobel Petric?
  • Gen. 2 Thomas? Robertson & Jean Jeffrey?
  • Gen. 3 John? Robertson & Elizabeth Scott?
  • Gen. 4 Jeffrey? Robertson & Elizabeth Bowman?
  • Gen. 5 Jeffrey Robertson 1709-1784 & Judith Tanner 1710-1785
  • Gen. 6 David? Robertson & Mildred Ratliff?
  • Gen. 7 David Robertson & Mary Henry - this is where we come in . . . somewhat for sure . . .
Will be creating brick wall pages with this data and research to be evaluated more thoroughly.  See To Do List

Did some research on Virginia counties & parish formations for Bushrod Doggett entry.  Clarifying marriage place and his residence at the time of his marriage - Brunswick Parish.
