Small Notebook - Magazine of Virignia Genealogy, Part 3

Chiarello, Susan. "Hanover County 1763 Quit Rent Roll," Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Vol. 49, No. 4, 2011, p. 5+. [[Peter Lyons?], Samuel Gist, Hanover County, Virginia, 1763 Rent roll, Folder G.II, British Public Record Office Class A.O. 13/30, Loyalist Claims, Series II-Virginia, British Public Claims, Colonial Records Project, Reel 252, LVA, Richmond.]

Page 5 - . . . Samuel Gist left a considerable estate when he returned to Great Britain during the War. For decades following the war, he petitioned he government for restoration of his considerable fortune. This list was one item found among his many papers.

Quit rents are fees paid by Virginia landowners to the King of England or to Lord Fairfax if the land fell within his proprietary. Extant quit rent rolls are rare in Virginia, especially outside the Fairfax Proprietary. This roll is among the last of such rolls, since few were collected after 1763 when the Stamp Act was enacted.  For those researching in colonial Hanover or even post Revolutionary War, it might be wise to at least check the papers in Gist's claim for possible memorials from Hanover residents.

There are several inconsistencies. At the beginning of the roll the unnamed sheriff states that the roll is for 1760; however, there is a column for 1763 which appears to be the year that these quit rents were collected. Also, next to some individuals names are years with acreage next to the years. This appears to be the last year that the quit rents were collected for that person and the

Dad's Notebook No. 10, Part 2

Anderson, Viginia. Pucketts, Vaughans, Harlans, Meeks & Allied Families, Wayne County, Illinois, 1988.

Our earliest known Meeks ancestor was William Meeks, who came from England, according to the journal of a great grandson, Priddy Meeks (1795-1886). Two of William Meek's sons were William Jr. and John. We are descended from William Meeks, Jr., who married Molly Nolin / Nolan.  We do not have definite dates for the birth and marriage of William Jr., but it is thought that he was born around 1730 and married about 1750. He may have died in Greenville District, S.C.   There is a bill of sale in Greenville District, SC, Deek Book D, p. 359 from Wm. Meeks to his son Athe Meeks - 7 Jan. 1797. I have no record that William Jr. accompanied his children to Kentucky, so he may have died in South Carolina .

The children of William Jr. & Molly (Nolin) Meeks are believed to have all been born in Allens Creek, Hanover Co., VA. Their children are as follows:
  1. Priddy Meeks, b. ca. 1751 md. Elizabeth Denny (our ancestors)
  2. John Meeks b. ca. 1753 md. Elizabeth Walker
  3. Susanna Meeks b. ca. 1755 md. Paul Meecham
  4. Athe Meeks b. ca. 1756, md. Margaret Snead (parents of Priddy Meeks, who wrote

Notebook - Virginia #7, Part 3

Kegley, F.B. Kegley's Virginia Frontier, Roanoke, VA: Southwest Virginia Historical Society, 1938.

Early Adventurers on the Roanoke 1740-1760 & the Land They Occupied
May 2, 1745, the first deed conveys from John Buchanan, yeoman to David Cloyd yeoman, from Newcastle County, Pennsylvania, 400 acres, all that tract lying and being in Orange County called Augusta on the west side of the Blue Ridge west of the James River on the head of a branch of Goose Creek. - Orange County Deed Book 10, p. 33

From these early grants we learn that the main river of Roanoke was called Goose Creek, that its north branch now called Tinker Creek was called Buffalo Creek with its lower part designated Smith's Creek, and the south branch of Roanoke as later, called the South Fork of Roanoke. From later land records we learn that Captain George Robinson started the community by settling on a small tract of land, 191 acres, on a branch of Buffalo Creek where William Preston afterward established his home called Greenfield, adjoining the tract at the head of this branch which John Buchanan sold to David Cloyd. The Cloyd land and home place afterwards become the Withrow-Mitchell and Firebaugh place, and the upper part of the branch was called Turkey-cock Creek.

John Cloyd - In November, 1759, the property of John Cloyd, deceased, was appraised by Edward, Joseph and Bryan McDonald. David Cloyd was appointed guardian for the orphans, John and Mary Cloyd, and the administrator of John's estate. He report of the settlement made in November, 1764,

Notebooks - Kentucky #7

Brookes-Smith Joan. Index for Old Kentucky Surveys & Grants, no imprint, ca. 1974

It was on 16 June, 1774, when James Harrod and his party of pioneer settlers reached the plateau between the Salt and Kentucky Rivers in the heart of a land that would one day be called Kentucky. Physically exhausted from their long trip down the Ohio and up the Kentucky River and fearful of the ever present danger from roving bands of Indians, they gave no thought to the restless discontent of their counterparts who lived along the Eastern seaboard. Uppermost in their minds was survival.

Acutely aware that they had penetrated deep within enemy territory, they immediately set about laying out Harrod's Town. . . .

They were followed shortly by Daniel Boone, Benjamin Logan, John Floyd, Simon Kenton and numerous other pioneer leaders. Their greatest enemy, or so they believed was the Indian. They could not have known that Fate was already laying the groundwork that would lead the Eastern seaboard revolutionary and the Western pioneer to a common goal, a goal to establish a permanent home which was destined to erupt into a long and vicious legal war.

Unfortunately, many of the earliest settlers believing that just to settle the land was all that was necessary for ownership delayed too long the registration of their surveys and claims. Apparently

Cornwell Connections - The story about "why a mountain climber likes to scale the highest peak" is becoming well known. When one of the explorers of a recent expedition attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest was asked "Why?", the mountain climber looked incredulously at his questioner and replied: "Because it is THERE!"

Many genealogy researchers could well give that same answer to those who ask such questions as "Why do you like to delve so much into the past? What good does it do you to find out who your great-great-great-grandparents were, etc.? Why do you want to learn the history of generations long past?"

The same answer as the mountain climber gave can often be given - "Because it is THERE!"

This answer would not always apply, of course. If a person's immediate grandparents happened to come to the United States from some European or other foreign country, perhaps 100 years ago or so, there sometimes would be nothing more you could learn about them in America than their birth and death dates, and something of their life story in this country. In that case, if you sought any information beyond the generation of your two grandfathers, you would have to go abroad, or
