Capon Bridge, West Virginia |
Pugh, Maud. Capon Valley: Its Pioneers & Their Descendants 1698 to 1940, Vol. II, Baltimore, MD: Clearfield Company, Inc., 2000. Originally printed in 1946.
p. 20 Fort Edwards: This fort was built by Joseph Edwards on his 400-acre ract, lying on both sides of Capon River, where Capon Bridge now [p. 21] stands. It was completed in or before the year 1748. It stood about one-half mile below where the old North Western Turnpike at a later date crossed Capon near a ferryboat crossing.
This Fort, located on the west side of the river, enclosed a never-failing spring of water, the same spring used by the family of Mr. Fenton Riley at this time, who lives north of and near Capon Bridge High School.
Fort Edwards must have been large, considering that it was for some years the only safe shelter from the Indians nearer than Wincheser and, it is thought, saved nearly all the families then in the whole Capon Valley from slaughter during the early Indian warfare.
The 400 acres was willed by Edwards to Samuel and Jesse Pugh, his grandson, the latter being the great grandfather of Mr. Amos L. Pugh, and he former the reputed founder of Capon Bridge, Settlement "the Ferry" - Mary Edwards, daughter of Joseph Edwards, married Robert Pugh, father of Samuel and Jessie. They, Robert and Mary, were later parents of ten other children, twelve in all.
p. 27 Rev. John Engle of Cold Stream married Mary Cooper - see Cooper Family. . . . [daughter unnamed] married into the Michael Brill family and left a son who was at one time principal of Romney School. He died in Ohio.

p. 44 Hebron Church - Soon after the Revolution, two German congregations grew up on Capon above Yellow Springs, since most of the settlers there at this time were Germans. They were known as Lutherans and the German Reformed. They both worshiped in the same house, a church of hewn logs that was called the Capon Church. Their official records give 1786 as the basic date and this building still stands - but not now used for a church.
Ministers from the Virginia charges preached for them. Eventually they united as one church under a Lutheran pastor, Reverend Reck.
In 1849 they built a new church, Hebron; H.J. Richardson was its first pastor. This church still serves the people and stands near Intermont Post Office and the beautiful Capon Lake, on Highway No. 23. A Centennial was held in 1886.
Among the earliest Communicants of this congregation were Switzers, Rudolphs, Brills, Klines, Secrests, Baumgardners and Spaids. Among the ministers of this church were the beloved Peter Miller and the scholarly D.W. Michael, besides Reverends Keil, Wade, and others.
p. 45 Shiloh M.E. Church, South - Very early in 1800 the community now known as Lehew, West Virginia, realized their need of a building that could be used for church and school, and as a public meeting house, there being no such house in that locality. . . .
p. 46 Jeremiah James Reid, 1st, gave the land for the building and cemetery.
A double house was built of hewn logs constructed with nails made at a forge. There was a chimney at each end and a partition between the rooms, one room of which was designed for worship and the other a school room, and in case of overflow of either, the folding partition was removed.
p. 47 This church accomodated the membership until about the year 1876. Among the early families who were communicants were Jonathan Jeremiah Reid and his brother John Reid, William Racy, Joseph Hannam, Amos Anderson, Barholomew LaFalette [La Follette], Jesse McKee, Abraham Brill, and his sons Jonathan and Amos Brill, Malinda Reid, S.W. Anderson, Angelina Anderson and others.
The new Shiloh Church now on No. 23 and practically the same grounds as the old, was launched and constructed by many of the same familes as the old. Considerable money was expended on this building which required zeal and self-denial on the part of this farming community.
A committee was appointed by the membership of the church as follows: Jonathan H. Brill, chairman, George F. Davis, A. Early Anderson, S.W. Anderson, George W. Farmer.
It is a beautiful country church, well located. The present pastor, C.H. Anderson. The Cemetery just below the church is artistically kept and the pride of the countryside.

Reid, John Reid, William Racy, Joseph Hannam, Amos Anderson, Bartholamew La Falette [La Follette], Jesse McKee, Abraham Brill, Jonathan Brill and others with J.J. Reid, III as teacher.
p. 78 Mt. Airy and Red Bud were built a few years later [after 1871]. School was held in a dwelling house on the A.A. McKee farm with Cordelia Reid, later Mrs. George Farmer as teacher. The second teacher in this house was J.M. Anderson. The next year Red Bud was built with Cordelia Reid as teacher, followed by C.J. Reid, Caudy Nixon, Joseph Alamong, Smith R. Brill, Walter La Falette, Alice La Falette, Cora LaFalette and Arthur R. Spaid.

Mr. Spaid was a shoemaker, not unlike the great shoemaker who shaped the young life of one of our most lived and worthy presidents, Calvin Cooledge. He had a literary turn of mind and read and jotted down in a note book matters of vital interest. Mr. Spaid was of a jovial disposition and his songs kept time with the music of his hammer. His shop was an office as neat and beautiful as the footwear that he turned out. In winter every window was radiant with potted plants, a place where his family and their friends loved to spend leisure hours and watch him at his work. He was up with the birds and when breakfast was ready, everything at the shop was spick and span, and the day's work launched. He was justly proud of every member of his family. J.W. Spaid died April 9, 1907. Mrs. Margaret Brill Spaid was intelligent, dignified and kindly, ambitious for her children, anxious about their health and comfort, thoughtful of all under her roof, orderly in her household duies, quiet in manner, after the fashion of the Brills and McKeevers, both of whom are examples of real worth, rather than love of the limelight. Mrs. Spaid died at their home near Concord and they are both buried in the beautiful cemetery adjoining Shiloh M.E. Church, South, near Lehew, WV.
