Page 241 - The Flora Journal-Record 1920s - The Flora Building Boom, more than 100 new houses two years. Record since securing international shoe factory. Milestones in the life of a town or city occur similar to those in the individual lives of the people. The Flora of a quarter century age is so unlike the city of today as to cause comment from those who knew the "old town" in its earlier period.

We have taken the time and effort to collect some statistics on material growth of Flora and find that most of the excellent modern buildings are creatures since 1903.

From 1903 to 1922 we have listed the following new business or other buildings:
  • Carnegie Library 1903
  • Ebner Ice & Cold Storage 1903
  • City Hall 1904
  • Two ward school buildings 1906
  • High school 1912
  • M.E. Church 1914

The past two years, Building Boom but the building history of the previous record has been outdistanced greatly during the two years from February 1923 to February 1925, from the date that the shoe factory was secured, to the present time. Especially is this true of new residences, the records showing that almost 100 new homes have been erected. . . .

Page 283 - Xenia (Written by the late Ernest Elliott, Clay County Historian) - . . . The next man to try [settling in Xenia area] was William Lewis from Becks Mill, Indiana, originally from North Carolina. He came in 1818 and stayed twelve years.

He was a hunter of note and is given credit - with his pack of about two dozen dogs - of running the wolves and wildcats out of Clay County. Mr. Lewis raised livestock and drove them through to the St. Louis market. He took an active part in the politics of the county, and was one of the first three County Commissioners. He was appointed by the Governor as one of the first two Justices of the Peace of Clay County. He served on the first Petit Jury and was granted a license to operate an inn in 1825.

In 1830, John Griffith and Dr. John Davenport came from Kentucky. The doctor bought the William Lewis property. Mr. Lewis entered land near Georgetown (now Bible Grove township) in 1836.  . . .

A Mr. Fitch settled south of William Lewis and kept an inn . . .
