Elizabeth Johnson

Born: ca. 1740 Upper Dublin Township, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania
Died: Aug. 1823 Shelby County, Kentucky

Buried: Possibly in Hunters Lane Cemetery, Shelby County, Kentucky.  Her son Charles is buried there. 

Married: ca. 1761 Captain Charles Hinkle in Pennsylvania

Records:

1778 - family living in Rowan County, North Carolina, Charles Hinkle on Capt. Lopp's tax roll. 

1783 - Nov. 7 - Rowan Co., NC Vacant Land Entry:

#2689 Elizabeth Hinkle 200 acres on waters of Frey's Creek, adjoining Adam Tash & Christian Frey, including an improvement bought of Adam Weaver. 

Vacant lands forfeited by Lord Granville and settled up during the American Revolution. 

Families squatted on lands for up to 15 years before being able to clear deeds. 

1784 - Nov. 5 - Rowan Co., NC vacant land entry - #2819 Anthony Hinkle for the son of Charles Hinkle, deceased, 300 acres on the waters of Farmers Creek & Bushey Fork of Abbots Creek adjoining Edward Burk & Charles Hinkle's old lines. 

1784 - Nov. 30 - Rowan Co., NC vacant land entry #2834 Elizabeth Hinkle 200 acres on waters of Frey's Creek, adjoining Adam Tash & Christian Frey, including an improvement. Withdrawn. Philip Summory.   

1790 - Possibly living with her son Casper in Rowan County, North Carolina.  His household consisted of 2 males under 16, 2 males over 16 and four females

1800 - Elizabeth is not listed as head of household in the 1800 census in Rowan County.  There is no Charles Hinkle listed on the census.  Casper is listed:
  • 4 males under 10 Casper Jr., Matthias, Charles, Isaac
  • 1 male 26-44 Casper
  • 2 females under 10 
  • 2 females 10-15 
  • 1 female 26-44 Fanny (Robertson) Hinkle

August 9th 1801 
Difficult to read, Elizabeth Hinkle mentions her son Casper, third page:
". . . in respect of my claim of dowry in the land that my son Casper Hinkle sold to Geo. Spraker that we have amicably agreed to settle the same between us without further Law proceedings -- therefore ---- if the same . . . .my . . . which . . . the forty shillings that Mr. Cardeleigh (??) paid . . . is a sufficient fee for . . . you . . . . "

1806 - May - Receipt in Andrew Caldcleugh Mill Account Book housed at the University of Alabama.  
Received from And'w Caldcleugh Twenty-Six Dollars for keeping his House at the Mill from May 1805 to May 1806 in full to that time $26--
Elizabeth Hinkel 
1810 -  Elizabeth Hinkle is not listed on the 1810 census.  Her son Charles was living in Shelby County, KY and her son Casper was still in Rowan County, NC. It is unknown when Elizabeth moved to Shelby County, Kentucky.  She may have gone with Charles ca. 1808 or with Casper ca. 1814. 

1820 - Elizabeth Hinkle is not listed on the 1820 census.  She was probably living in Shelby County, Kentucky.

1823 - February 15 - Elizabeth wrote her will: 
The Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Hinkle of Shelby County State of Kentucky considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory (Blessed be Almighty God for the same).  Do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say) First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Charles Hinkle all my beds, bed clothes and bedsteads.  I give and bequeath to my daughters all my clothes to be equally divided amongst them their heirs etc. I will and order that Elizabeth Hinkle daughter of my son Charles, have my large walnut chest also I give and bequeath to my children Each and every one included, heirs, etc. all my money – notes, accounts & claims – to be equally divided among them.  And lastly I hereby appoint my son Charles Hinkle executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord 1823.

1823 - August -  Casper Hinkle & David Talbott probated Elizabeth's will: 
A writing purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Hinkle, dec'd. was produced in court where upon David Talbott and Casper J. Hinkle two of the subscribing witnesses thereto being duly sworn states that said writing was signed, sealed acknowledged and delivered by the said Elizabeth as and for his last Will and Testament and that ____  they believe  she was of sound Desposing mind and memory at the time of doing the same which writing is order to be recorded where upon Charles Hinkle the ____ named is said will came into court and took upon himself the burthen of the execution thereof and having taken the oath required by law and entered into bond with David Talbot his security in the penalty of $1000 conditioned as the law directs ______ of land will is granted him in due form of law.
