Albert "Red" William Gentles, 99 of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 6:34 am August 13, 2022 at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. He was born February 7, 1923 in Okolona, Arkansas o the late Henry Lee & Florence (Rhodes) Gentles. Albert married Alpha Melton on February 11, 1944 in Morganfield, Kentucky. They were blessed with fifty years of marriage before she preceded him in death on July 26, 1994. 

Red is survived by his children, Anna Warren of Port Orange, Florida, Ralph Gentles of Mt. Vernon, David Gentles & wife Karen of Woodlawn, Charles Gentles of Mt. Vernon, Todd Gentles & wife Lisa of Montgomery, Texas, Mary Spiller of Mt. Vernon; sixteen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Red was preceded in death by his siblings, Mattie Smith Peters, Amos Gentles, Lawrence Gentles, Alfred Gentles, Charles Gentles, Maggie Alred, Josaphine Buck, Birdie Gentles, and Susie Little.

Red owned and operated Generals Drilling Company. He built Alta Motel in Mt. Vernon and owned and operated that as well as Fishing Temple Bar Resort in Arizona. He joined CC Camp at an early age and was a member of the Oil & Gas Association. Red was a lifetime member with the Knights of Columbus and was 3rd Degree. He enjoyed to dance but above all, red loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed.

A visitation will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 9 - 10 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. A funeral service will begin at 10 am with Father Nick Junker officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
