page 34 - [at the court house of said county on the third Tuesday, July 1760] - The last will & testament of John Gurley dec'd. was admitted to be proved by the oath of Joseph Gurley evidence. At ye same time Nathan Arthur Gurley & Nathan Gurley sones to the testator appeared & qualified as executors. Ordered that ye same be recorded.
On the motion of Mr. Ballard on behalf of the widow of Wm. Gurley dec'd. praying letters of administration of the estate of her said late husband. The same is granted & she accordingly took the oath of an administratrix & tenders Jon. Ballard & Joseph Gurley as her securities who are accepted of, & it is further ordered that the said administratrix be at liberty to sell such part of the said intestates estate as is perishable & as she may judge convenient.
page 40 - at an inferior court of pleas & quarter sessions begun & held for said county on the third Tuesday in Oct. 1760 . . . Mary Gurley administratrix of ye estate of William Gurley dec'd. delivered into court and inventory of said estate on oath.

page 48 - whereas John Balard & Joseph Gurley at July Court last was alowd of to be security for widow Mary Gurley on her administratrix of her husband William Gurley's estate have declined ye same. It is ordered that John Gurley & Benet Blackman be alowd as security in their room, in ye penalty  of two hundred pounds.

Ordered that Nathan Gurleys mark be recorded which is a crop in each ear & a half moon under the left.
page 76 - an account sale of the estate of John Gurley dec'd. was delivered into Court by William Bryan esquire, high sheriff, ordered to be filed. [nd]
page 78 - ordered that John Gurleys mark be recorded which is a crop & a slit in each ear & a nick under each. [nd]
Ordered that Joe Gurleys son of John Gurley mark be recorded which is a crop on the right ear & a (blurred) in each. [nd]
Ordered that William Gurleys son of John Gurley mark be recorded which is a swallow fork in ye right ear and an under kutt in each. [nd]
page 80 - [1761] the last will & testament of John (torn) dec'd. was exhibited into court & proved (torn) oaths of Thos. Whitlief? & Henry Bulls subscribing witnesses there unto who say that they saw the said testator sign, seal, publish and declare the same to be his last will & testament that he was of sound & perfect mind & memory & at the same time they saw Nathan Gurley evidence the same with them.

Ordered that Jacob Gurley & Bryan Lynch be added to the company that work on the road under Jesse Hays.
page 269 - Thursday the 2d September 1784 . . . The report of the grand Jury being exami[ned] they present the following children as objects that deserve the notice of the Court, having no suitable means of Subsistance, and in the possession of people of bad morrels, ill fame, and extra low cercumstances, / to wit / . . . Sarah Williamso[n] daughter of Catherine Williamson . . . Ordered that the several Constables who live convenient the said Children be directed to bring them to next Court that they may be provided for as the law directs, for which service the Constabl[e] are to be allowed.
pages 270-271 - 1784 - Ordered that the following bounds be a dis--- of Neuse River to be cleared, over which Edwa[rd] Blurton is to superintend Begining at the road on the river opposite Smithfield, thence up the road towards Matthew Jones's to the Eight Miles Post near Tomlinson's Mill, thence to cross Swifts Creek in a s direct a line as may be to Vinsons Path at Robert Burches so as to include Thomas Tomlinson, Alexander Averyt & Robert Burch, then along the said Path including Jesse Britt and Crossing the said river so as to includ[e] John Vinson & Drury Vinson then to run from Drury Vinsons with Holim---- old Mill Path to Cattail, then down Cattail to little then crossing the said river to the old road, then down said road to littl[e] Creek then along Gurleys Mill Path to the road at John Gurleys, thence along the said road to Smithfield, that Charles Parish warn the hands on the (South & North are overwritten) side of the river to meet at such times and places and with such Tools as the said Edward Blurton shall direct, and return a just and fair list of all the Inhabitants so warned within his Dis[tric] to the said Edward Blurton for which Service he shall be exempt from further duty. T--- Thomas Avera Warn in like manner the hands on the south side of the river, which is to intitle him to the like exemption.

page 19 - Aug. 27, 1787 - The exors. of Peter Johnson vs. Stephen Edwards & Lazarus Gurley: Philip Raiford esquire who was summoned as a Garnishe by reason said Suit to declare what property he ahs in his hand of Stephen Edwards he declares on his oath that he has in his hands the sum of Sixty pounds five shillings the property of sd. Edwards the Court at the same time ordered that Thirty One pounds & Costs with interest from Jary. 1781 be deducted out of said sum to satisfy a Judgment said Raeford obtained against said Edwards.

Ordered, that Joel Lawhon son of David Lawhon dec'd. be bound apprentice to Edwards Gurley to be taught the Business of a Hatter Until he arrives to the age of Twenty One years, he being about ten years of age at this time, whereupon Indentures were Executed.

page 64 - Tuesday, 24th February 1789 - District No. 5 from the mouth of bay Branch to Captain Boons landing, the bounds on the South Side the river from the mouth of the bay Branch out by Buck (or Bush?) Island and Colo. Williams Senr. including all the hands on their? plantations, in that direction eight miles from the river, and from Captain Boons landing out by Lewis Jernigans leaving him in the 6th District including all the lands between there and the upper Bounds. The bounds on the north side from the mouth of the Bay Branch out by Uriah & Davis Stricklings and Jacob Bracewells taking in Bracewell and leaving out the two Stricklings in the 4 district, and from Captain Boons landing along the Mill path out by John Gurleys to Raifords to include all the hands to the upper bounds, Abraham Gamelian Overseer of the Same.
page 71 - At a County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions begun & held for the County aforesaid at the Court House thereof on the 25th day of May in the thirteenth year of American Independence and in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-Nine. . . Ordered that Elisha Howell be appointed overseer of the Road in room & district of Edwards Gurley.
page 75 - May 25, 1789 - Sarah Oniel single woman of this county having sworn a child to John Robertson. It is therefore ordered that said John Robertson pay unto said Sarah Oniel this day six pounds five shillings for the expence of child birth &c and further that he pay unto her quarterly sufficient to make the up the sum of seven pounds annually commencing from the date hereof, until Seven Years shall be expired and that enter into Bond with Security agreeable to Law to keep said Child from becoming Chargeable to this County.
State vs. John Robertson: Sundry Persons having been bound in Recogs. for the appearance of said Robertson at this Court in Consequence thereof said Robertson came into Court & Surrendered himself in discharge of his Bail, when he was ordered in Coustody of the Sheriff.
page 77 - May 25, 1789 - Administration on the Estate of Sarah Gurley is granted to Ism [Isom] Gurley who entered into Bond with Jeremiah Powell esqr. in the sum of Five Hundred Pounds, as his security for the faithful discharge of his duty therein and Qualified agreeable to Law. Ordered that Letters issue. 16/pd.
page 120 - At a County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions begun and held for the County aforesaid at the Court House thereof on the Thirtieth day of August in the Fifteenth Year of American Independence and in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety . . . page 126 - Wednesday 1st September 1790 . . . Ordered that John Hughs a base born Child of Bedith? Hughs be bound apprentice to Edwards Gurley until he arrives to the Age of Twenty One Years he being Eleven Years Old the 13th day of August last to be taught the Business of a hatter, whereupon Indentures were Executed.
page 179 - At a County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions begun and held for the County aforesaid at the Court House thereof on the twenty-eighth day of November being the last Monday in the Month and in the Sixteenth Year of American Independence, in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety One. . . . Ordered that James Spieer [Speer?] be appointed Constable in Capt. John Vinsons district in room of Edward Blurton wh ocame into Court and entered into bond with Joseph Irwin & Joseph Spieer his Securities in the Sum of Two Hundred & fifty pounds current Money for the faithful discharge of his duty therein & Qualified agreeable to Law.
page 183 - Nov. 28, 1791 - Pursuant to an Order of last this Court, Arthur Bryan, Philip Raiford and John Bryan junr.  Esquires made return of a Settlement by them made between the Estate of Henry Bailey dec'd. & Joseph Spieer [Speer?] Executor thereof from which it appears there is a ballance due from said Executor to said Estate of £162.8.9 which was ordered to be filed . . . page 185 - Nov. 30, 1791 - The Justices vs Ann Crawford Venire: which the Sheriff Returned Executed and the Jury reported in the following Words, This May Certifie that We the subscribers was Summoned by the Sheriff to attend at the Plantation whereon Benjamin Crawford decd. formerly lived to enquire whither Ann Crawford Relict of the aforesaid Benjamin Crawford decd. was in a State of Luncay or not & In Obedience to the summons on the 18th day of this Instant we did Meet at the Place aforesaid We proseeded to Make enquiry where having the aforesaid Ann Crawford Relict of the aforesaid Benjamin Crawford decd. in View do find that She is the State aforesaid that is to Say in a State of Lunacy, Certified under Our hands & Seals this 18th day of November AD 1791 . . . Edwards Gurley & their Oaths gave a Verdict for the Plaintiff for £5 & Costs when the Court ordered that only there/three? witnesses be Taxed? in bill of costs.
