Thursday, June 28, 1866 - Death of an Old Soldier - Johnson Fitzgerald, a soldier who was under the command of Gen. Harrison, and who survived the battle of Tippecanoe - fought on the 7th of November, 1811 - died at his residence in this county a short time ago, of typhoid or winter fever. At the time of his death Mr. Fitzgerald was one of four of the survivors of that memorable battle living in this county. He was true to his country to the last. he names of the three still living are David Johnson, Henry Reel and John I. Neely.
Thursday, July 12, 1866 - Fatal Accident - We learn from Mr. J.T. Lockwood, of Johnson township, the following particulars of the accident resulting in the death of Mr. Wm. Woolf.
On Saturday, June 30th, Mr. Woolf, Mr. Lockwood and his little son, six years of age, were returning from Evansville with a wagon load of material, such as glass, sash, doors, &c., which Mr. L. had purchased in the city for the purpose of finishing his new dwelling. All three were sitting in front on the load, and the little boy desiring to drive was handed the lines. After leaving Mechanicsville he little boy undertook to pass a wagon, when Mr. Woolf caught hold of one of the lines with the intention of slapping one of the horses to accelerate his speed, and in doing so leaned too far over and fell between the two horses.  Two wheels passed over his body injuring him so badly as to cause his death in a few hours. He was a citizen of Haubstadt, a good mechanic, and very highly esteemed. He leaves a wife and five children who mourn his loss.

Nolcox, Terry. Gibson County, Indiana Source Book, Vol. II, Princeton, IN, nd board of
Gibson County had been divided into three townships in 1817 by the board of county commissioners. The boundaries were established as follows: White River township - "that part of the county north of the Patoka River and west of the line dividing the counties of Gibson and Pike;" Patoka township - "that part of the county south of Patoka River and between said river and Anderson's Creek, and a due south course from the head of said creek to the line dividing the counties of Gibson and Posey;" Montgomery - that part of the county west of Anderson's Creek and a line drawn due west from the head of the same to Posey County and north of the line dividing the counties of Gibson and Posey."
During the collection of the 1820 census data, the boundaries of Gibson County were different than the present ones. Sections 33 - 36 of Township 3 South Range 14 West and Sections 31 - 36 of Township 3 South Range 13 West, now part of Posey County, were within the boundaries of Gibson County. Sections 1 - 18 of Township 4 South, Range 11 West, now part of Johnson Township in Gibson County, were within the boundaries of Posey County.
All of the area covered by Township 4 South Ranges 6-9 West, now part of Warrick County were within the boundaries of Gibson County.
Sections 1-3, 10-15, 22-27 and 34-36 of Township 3 South Range 9 West and Sections 5-8, 17-20 and 29-32 of Township 3 South, Range 8 West, now part of Barton township in Gibson County, were within the boundaries of Pike County. Additionally, all of the current area of Columbia township was within the boundaries of Pike.
Finally, Sections 4, 5, 8 and 9 of Township 1 South, Range 9 West, and Sections 7-9, 16-21, 28-33 and all Locations and Surveys therein, now part of Pike County, were within the boundaries of Gibson County.
Patrick Payne administer of all and singular the goods, rights and chattles & credits of Robert Slaven Dec'd. came into court and made a partial settlement of his said administration by which it appears that he is entitled to a credit as per receipts and vouchers filed in the clerks office in the sum of one hundred and twenty Dollars eight and one half.
On farther settlement of the estate of Robert Slaven Decd it appears that the amount of the estate as per inventories of sale filed in the clerks office is two hundred and eighteen dollars fifty six and one fourth cents and that the administrators are entitled to a further credit of one hundred & three dollars twenty six cents which with the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars.

Cornwell Family Cemetery, Stampers Creek Township, Sec. 12, T1N, R1E, abandoned

Peter Cornwell born Virginia and married in Kentucky, went to Kentucky then came to Orange County in 1815. This farm where he settled still belongs to some of his descendants. For many years thi was called the A.J. Pickens farm.  Mr. Pickens having married Nancy Cornwell. There are perhaps 10 graves in this little neglected burial plot, only one of which has an inscription. The stone is broken and leans against a tree which has grown up in the group of graves. The well cut inscription is viz: Sacred to the memory of Peter Cornwell, who was born June 12, 1780. Married June 1, 1802, Died Oct. 1, 1842.
Elizabeth Arterburn Cornwell wife of Peter is known to be buried here. She died after Oct. 1842, as she is named in his will. Descendants of this couple are buried at Stampers Creek Church cemetery in Paoli township.
Highland Chapel Cemetery French Lick Township, Sec. T2N, R2W. A neighborhood cemetery, adjacent to a church built by Methodiss, but not inactive. The first burial was that of Frederick Speece in 1891. He was born in Virginia. Prior to the opening of the cemetery, his young son had died and was buried on the Speece farm across the road from the cemetery. The grave, marked only by a cedar, is on a hill.
