Research Notes - Coy/Edwards/Duncan

It's good to review your notes.  Here's a case in point.  When I was working on the Ohio Book No. 1 post I came across the marriage of Elizabeth Ann Coy & Jacob Duncan, January 18, 1844 in Muskingum Co.  Then I started doing more researching and came up with the following:

Jacob Duncan
Born: 1823 Ohio
Died: Unknown

Buried: Unknown

Married
1) Elizabeth Ann Coy - see below
2) Providence Edwards - see below

Elizabeth Ann Coy, probably the daughter of William (?) & Hester (?) (--?--) Coy

Born: ca. 1824 probably in Ohio
Died: between March and October 1848 - probably March or April when her daughter Anne Elizabeth was born and in Muskingum Co., OH

Buried: Unknown

Married: January 18, 1844 Jacob Duncan in Muskingum Co., OH

Children:
William b. 1846 Muskingum Co., Ohio
Anne Elisha / Anne Elizabeth / Alice Elizabeth b. ca. 1848 Muskingum Co., Ohio

Providence Edwards, daughter of Jacob & Mary (Porter) Edwards

Born: ca. 1827, Muskingum Co., OH
Died:

Buried: Unknown

Married 21 Oct. 1848 Jacob Duncan in Muskingum Co., OH

Children:
Jacob b. April 1850, Bartholomew Co., Indiana

Records:

Jacob moved his family to Bartholomew Co., Indiana ca. 1849.  The Coy and Edwards families moved there about the same time, so he was part of that exodus. This move included Richard Brooks who was Elizabeth Ann's brother-in-law.

1850 - Oct. 7 - Indiana - Bartholomew Co. census:
  • Duncan, Jacob, 27, blacksmith b. Ohio
  • Providence 22, b. Ohio
  • William 4, born Ohio
  • Anna E. 2 born Ohio
  • Jacob 6/12 born Indiana
Jacob moved the family again to Clay Co., Illinois between 1850 and 1860 probably about 1855 when Jacob Edwards died in Bartholomew County. Several members of the Edwards family and Richard Brooks moved to Clay County.

1860 - Aug. 14 - Illinois - Clay Co. census:
  • Duncan, Jacob, 38 blacksmith, real estate $500, personal estate $200, b. Ohio
  • Providence 30, b. Ohio
  • William 13 b. Ohio
  • Anne E. 11 b. Ohio
  • Jacob 9 b. Indiana
  • William Ganby 6 b. Indiana - may be Jacob's nephew or cousin, see below
  • Edwards, Albert H. 21, farm laborer, personal estate $200 b. Ohio - this is Providence Edward's brother
1861-1865 John W. Golden served in the Civil War in Company K of the 48th Illinois Infantry

1863 - July - Jacob Duncan [Sr.] registered for draft in Louisville, Clay Co., Illinois. He is listed as being 42, a blacksmith b. Ohio

ca. 1866 - John W. Golden married Anne Duncan, probably in Illinois

Probably between the end of the Civil War and 1868 Jacob moved his family to Minnesota.  At about this same time the Edwards family was splitting up.  Solomon moved his family to Missouri and then on to Kansas. In 1872 his daughter Mary married John Colclasure.  The Colclasures had intermarried with the Golden family and apparently Jacob Duncan's daughter married into that family as well.
