In 1822 William Goff, of Sheldon, brother of Hezekiah Goff, came to town, and for the sum of $1,000 bought the falls and much of the land surrounding.  He put into the saw-mill previously built by Blaisdell a run of stones for grinding.  Mr. Goff afterwards built the grist-mill now standing.  In making repairs on this mill, in 1884, the following inscription was found on the back side of the bolt: "The first grist-mill built in Richford was built by Colonel Seymour in 1797, burnt up in 1800.  The second built in 1803, by Jonathan Janes, and stood until William Goff built another in 1824.  William Goff built, in 1837, the mill now standing.  Men worked on this mill:  A. Newton, S. Brown, W. Davis, A. Squire, C. Smith, F. Lamb, J. Wells, Jon. J. Combs, R. Lathrop, J. Harvey, A. Carr, and J. Upham.
[Russell moved his family to Indiana in June 1837.]

I was member of the Genealogical Society of Vermont for several years and pulled pages from their periodical Branches & Twigs. Members were encouraged to submit genealogies which the editors turned into alphabetical lists containing, surname, first name, spouse, birthplace, birth year, marriage place, marriage date, death place, death date and member number.  Member numbers and addresses were published to facilitate linking up with cousins. This section was called the Apple Orchard.

But soon the right of land belonging to the schools began to yield something of a revenue so that in 1796, three trustees were appointed at the march meeting of that year, to take charge of the school-money.  They were Thomas Farnsworth, Phineas Page and Theoophilus Blake.  The following persons, at the same meeting, were appointed trustees of schools, exercising the same functions as our committees of the present day, vis: Erastus Safford, Asa Wilkins, Stephen Holmes, Abijah Hawley, Elkanah Lathrop and Zephaniah Holmes, showing that there were 6 school districts maintaining schools in that year.
Richford Schools, p. 283

  • Jonathan Janes came up from Hartford, Connecticut as agent for the Connecticut proprietors.  He was active in early town affairs and engaged in extensive land speculation for the proprietors and himself.  He built the first house in what is now the village at the northwest corner of the present Main Street and Intervale Avenue.  Janes stayed a few years; he moved on when the initial rush of land speculation was over.
  • Other early settlers coming into town two years later (1798) were the Rowland Powell family from Sheldon; their son, Bradford Powell and his family from Fairfield; Stephen Carpenter and his family from the Rutland area; and the Daniel Janes family.
