Ahnentafel #186 - Andrew Crissel

Andrew Crissel, Sr. aka Andreas Crysel

The name is spelled many ways in the records Crysel, Crisel, Crissel, Chrisel, Krisel, Krysel

Born:  ca. 1750, maybe in Germany, possibly in the Philadelphia area

Died: between Feb. 3 and June 1, 1823, Logan Co., KY

Buried:  Unknown

Married: Mary Miller, North Carolina

Records:

1776 - 1777 - a man named variously: Andrew Kressal, Andrew Kressel, Andrew Krissel, Andrew Krissal, Andrew Kissler, Andrew Cressel, Andrew Kresslar, Andrew Grisslar, Andrew Grisler, Andrew Gressler appears on the records of the German Battalion Continental Troops, American Revolution as a private in Captain Jacob Bunner's Company under different commanding officers.

This organization was formed in compliance with resolutions of Congress of May 25 & June
27, 1776 which provided a battalion of Germans be raised for the service of the United Colonies & that four companies be raised in Pennsylvania & four companies in Maryland. The organization was disbanded by Resolution of Congress of Cot. 3, 1780, which provided that the non-commissioned officers and privates be incorporated with the troops of their respective states & those not belonging to any particular state to be annexed to such Corps as the Commander in Chief should direct.

[The German Regiment was created in answer to the British hiring of Hessian mercenaries. It was formed as an extra continental regiment. Major Nicolas Haussegger was made colonel in command of the battalion. Captain George Stricker of Maryland was promoted lieutenant colonel and Ludowick Weltner of Maryland was elevated to major. The Pennsylvania companies came from the eastern part of the state. Frederick & Baltimore Counties in Maryland provided two companies each.]

While I have no proof that this man is one and the same as our Andrew, he certainly could be. I will be looking into this to see if I can prove it. In the meanwhile here are the records:

Andrew Krissel, German Battalion Continental Troops, American Revolution, Private

In Captain Jacob Bunner's Company in the German Battalion commanded by Col. George Striker

[Jacob Bonner/Bunner of Philadelphia was appointed Captain on July 12, 1776 when the German Battalion was organized. He served in that capacity throughout the War, retiring on January 1, 1781. He recruited troops in Philadelphia, so it's probable that this Andrew Krissel lived in Philadelphia.]

Appears on company payroll on the organization for the month:

from December 1, 1776 to March 1, 1777, £2-10s per month
Amount of pay £7-10s.

This organization was formed in compliance with resolutions of Congress of May 25 & June 27, 1776 which provided a battalion of Germans be raised for the service of the United Colonies & that four companies be raised in Pennsylvania & four companies in Maryland. The organization was disbanded by Resolution of Congress of Cot. 3, 1780, which provided that the non-commissioned officers and privates be incorporated with the troops of their respective states & those not belonging to any particular state to be annexed to such Corps as the Commander in Chief should direct.

[Dec. 22, 1776 - Battle of Trenton against the Hessian mercenaries.  Toward the end of the battle, Haussegger's men yelled in German to the Hessians to lay down their weapons and surrender.  With their commander Johann Rall and other high officers wounded, the Hessians soon surrendered.]

[Dec. 26, 1776 - Washington crossed the Delaware in the early morning hours back to Pennsylvania.]

[Dec. 29, 1776 - Washington and his troops return to New Jersey.]

[Jan. 1, 1777 - reinforcements block British advance six miles south of Princeton.]

[Jan. 2, 1777 - Battle of Assunpink Creek - Haussegger was captured with some of his men.]

[Jan. 3, 1777 - Battle of Princeton - a colonial victory after which Lord Cornwallis abandoned many of his posts in New Jersey and retreated to New Brunswick.  The period from January through March 1777 is known as the Forage War.  Both armies were in winter quarters and German Battalion along with other companies engaged in numerous scouting and harassing operations against the British.]

[Feb. 23, 1777 - Battle of Spanktown under command of Lt. Col. George Stricker. There were 75 casualties among the British while only 5 killed, 9 wounded in the German Battalion.]

[March 19, 1777 - many Americans were suspicious of Haussegger's "capture" at Assunpink Creek.  After his parole, he was removed from the rolls and sent home.  Colonel Henry Leonard Arendt was appointed to lead the regiment.]

[Oct. 4, 1777 - Battle of Germantown - It is unclear whether the German Battalion participated in this battle.  Germantown, at the time was a small community on the outskirts of Philadelphia.  Several of my mom's families lived there at the time.  Today it is a neighborhood within the city limits of Philadelphia.  It's probable that many of the men in the German Battalion were from Germantown.
