John Wesley Hunt

Born: 1797 Fleming Co., Kentucky
Died: June 25, 1858, Brown Co., Indiana

Buried: Unknown

Married: his cousin Jaily Hunt, May 10, 1829 in Bath Co., Kentucky

Occupation: farmer

Migration:  moved to Indiana ca. 1837 

Note:  The Hunts were all about naming children after parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters which combined with a relatively common last name can make them difficult to sort out.

Census:
1800 no extant Kentucky census; two John Hunts listed in Fleming County tax lists

1810 Fleming Co., KY, age 13 living with parents and siblings.

1820 not found on the census

1830 Fleming Co., KY, the newlyweds were living in the Eastern Division of the County.

1840 Wayne Co., IN - a J.W. Hunt on the census with the right number of children the right ages.  This could be John Wesley as his mother died in Hagerstown, Wayne Co., IN in 1843.

1846 - April 7, Brown Co., IN - a John Hunt purchased federal land:
  • T9, R3, Section 2, 36.26 acres, SW1/4, NW1/4

To all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting:

Whereas John Hunt of Brown County, Indiana has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a Cerificate of the Register of the Land Office at Jeffersonville whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said John Hunt according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820, entitled "An Act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands for the South West quarter of the North West quarter of Section two in Township nine North of Range three East, in the District of Land subject to sale at Jeffersonville, Indiana, Containing thirty-six Acres and twenty six hundreths of an acre according to the official plat of the survey of the said Lands, returned to the General Land Office by the Surveyor General, which said tract has been purchased by the said John Hunt.

Now know ye, that the United States of America, in consideration of the Premises, and in conformity with the several acts of Congress, in such case made and provided, have given & granted, and by these presents Do Give & Grant unto the said John Hun, and to his heirs, the said tract above described: To have & to hold the same, together with all the rights, privileges, immunities, and appurtenances of whatsoever nature, thereunto belonging, unto the said John Hunt and to his heirs & assigns, forever. 

1850 Brown Co., IN - Hamblen Twp.  age 53, John owned $600 worth of real estate, living with his wife and ten children.

1879 - Brown Co., IN - John Hunt's probate

Civil Suit is brought by Jaily G. Hunt against William P. Hunt, Lavonia H. Hunt, Lorona E. Hunt, Loretta J. Hunt, Joseph A. Hunt, Priscilla F. Hunt & Thomas Mulligan. Box 97, File 3.
