Who died July 1707 in ye 87th year of his age
Deacon Thomas Adgate

Born: 1623, England
Died: July 21, 1707, Norwich, Connecticut

Buried: Old Norwich Town Cemetery

Married: 1) (--?--) ca. 1650, probably in     Saybrook Colony
2) 1659 Mary (Marvin) Bushnell in Saybrook, Connecticut

Religion: Congregational, served as deacon in Saybrook from continuously from 1646 until his move to Norwich in 1660 where he was appointed a deacon of the Norwich church.

Civic Offices:
Townsman in Norwich in 1674, 1676, 1679, 1680, 1682, 1684, 1686 Townsmen or selectmen were elected to perform the business of the town between town meetings. Borrowing from the English councils idea the colonists began to elect between three and nine selectmen to serve for fixed terms. Powers and duties differed from town to town.  In general, the townsmen were required to carry out and enforce the votes of the town meeting.  Other duties began to emerge in the late 17th century such as treasury, care of the poor, schools, admission of new citizens to town, road upkeep and other public works and defense.  From 1669 to 1678 Norwich operated with 2 townsmen per year.  In 1679 six were chosen and in subsequent years the number varied from two to five.

Judge in 1662 - along with Thomas Tracy & Francis Griswold, chosen to try all cases to the value of 40 shillings. These formed a Court of Commission.

Records:
ca. 1645 - Connecticut - Thomas Adgate immigrated from England

1646 - Connecticut - Saybrook - Deacon Thomas Adgate was active in the formation of the First Church.

1650 - Connecticut - Saybrook - Thomas Adgate's name appears among those to whom land at Saybrook was granted in 1650. As one of the first seven deacons, he was responsible for drawing up a doctrine of faith, to which they gave formal assent, entering into covenant with God and with one another. Others joined them in by making the same profession & covenant.

The first church building stood near the east end of Middle Lane, fronting the green at Saybrook Point, and from the civil as well as religious gatherings it accommodated was always called the Meeting House. It was a square structure whose four roofs meet in the center, where was an outlook for Sabbath sentinels. This house of the Lord always bristled with defensive weapons. The burning of the fort having left the place in a comparatively defenseless position, some of the artillery belonging to the town was placed near the meeting house, and every man obliged to bring his sword with him on Sabbath and town meeting days. None were exempted save the pastor and Deacon Thomas Adgate.

1655/6 - Jan. 7 - Connecticut - Saybrook - Thomas Adgate attended town meeting

1659 - Connecticut - Saybrook - Thomas Adgate listed as deacon of the church

1659 - June - Connecticut - Norwich - The town of Norwich was settled and there were 35 proprietors of which Thomas Adgate was one. Many Saybrook settlers moved to Norwich with Rev. James Fitch and Captain John Mason. Home lots were were dated November. Thomas Adgate's allotment was south of a ravine near Sentry Hill.  His land met (--?--) Olmstead at the corner, completing the circle of home lots around the central block.  Opposite the homestead of Adgate a branch of the town street ascended Sentry Hill and came down again to the main road below the corner, in the line of the old Indian trail toward the fords of the Yantic.  The Lothrop house-lot comprised six acres, and had a street, highway, or lane on every side of it. Probably it lay on the side-hill opposite Adgate's. The early intermarriages in the families of Lothrop, Leffingwell, Adgate and Bushnell, leading them to divide house-lots and settle in contiguous homes, make it difficult to determine the precise situation of each original grant. We can be confident only that these families had their first dwellings near together at the east end of the town plot. Norwich First House Lots, 1660

1660 - Connecticut - Norwich - Thomas Adgate admitted to Norwich church

1663 - Connecticut - Norwich - made a freeman

1669 - Connecticut - Norwich - Roll of freemen - includes Thomas Adgate

1672 - Connecticut - Norwich - Thomas Adgate on resident's list

1675 - February 29 - Connecticut - Thomas Adgate named along with Capt. John Mason, Mr. James Fitch, Thomas. Leffingwell, Sen'r. and other prominent citizens of Norwich in Joshua Uncas', Sachem of Monheag Indians will.

1681 - Connecticut - Norwich - along with Thomas Leffingwell and John Post, Thomas Adgate appointed to search for original deeds and records of the town.

1694 - Sept. 12 - Connecticut - Norwich - At a town meeting:

Inasmuch as it hath pleased God to lay his afflicting hand upon our Reverend pastor Mr. James Fitch that at present he is disabled with respect to the work of the ministry among us - Wherefor the towne appoint Left. Thomas Leffingwell, Left. William Backus, Simon Huntington Sen'r. Thomas Adgate and Richard Bushnell a Committee to treat with Mr. Jabez Fitch with respect unto his succeeding of his father in the work of the ministry among us.

1698 - March - Connecticut - Norwich - The meeting house was enlarged and repaired and when completed the townsmen were engaged to arrange the pews into eight classes, according to their dignity. This being done, five of the oldest and most respected inhabitants, viz: Lt. Thomas Leffingwell, Lt. William Backus, Deacon Simon Huntington, Thomas Adgate, Sen., and Serg. John Tracy, were directed to seat the people with due regard to rank: "the square pue to be considered first in dignity; the new seats and the fore seats in the broad ally next, and alike in dignity;" and so on through the eight classes.

1704 - May 22 - Connecticut - Norwich - Thomas  wrote his will:
