Nathaniel Richardson

Born: 2 January 1650/51, Woburn, Massachusetts

Died: 4 December 1714, Woburn, Massachusetts

Buried: probably in the First Burial Ground of Woburn, Massachusetts, no stone found

Married: Mary (--?--)  ca. 1672

Military: In the great Indian War, known as King Philip's War, he was a soldier in Capt. Prentiss' troop of horse, and was wounded in the Great Swamp Fight, Dec. 19, 1675. Seven other Woburn men, Eliah Tottingham, Caleb Simonds (probably Nathaniel's brother-in-law), Zachariah Snow, Lieut. John Wyman, John Baker, Francis Wyman Jr., and Peter Bateman were wounded in that tremendous encounter, and John Wyman, Jr., a son of Lieut. John Wyman, Francis Wyman, Jr., and Peter Bateman died a few weeks after, probably from wounds then received.  Six brave captains fell in the action, and eighty men were killed or mortally wounded.  Four hundred were disabled besides the wounded. But of the Indians seven hundred warriors out of four thousand fell that day, and three hundred more died of their wounds or perished from the cold.

The General Court of Massachusetts in 1728 and 1732, made a grant of seven townships to the soldiers, or their heirs, who had done service in the Narraganset campaign of 1675, in King Philip's War. These townships, at least some of them were in the central and western parts of Massachusetts. Westminster, in Worcester County, was "Narraganset No. 2."  Templeton, in the same county, was "Narraganset No. 6."  The grantees of Narraganset No. 6 had a meeting, and in 1735 appointed a committee of five persons to lay out lots in Templeton, of forty acres each, for early cultivation.  One of the committee was Joshua Richardson. He drew one of these lots, as being a grandson of Nathaniel Richardson.  It was probably in this way that Capt. John Richardson and others of the name were induced to make their homes in Worcester County.

Amos b. Aug. 10, 1698, Woburn, MA, md. Abigail (--?--), the genealogy doesn't follow this Amos any further than his son Amos.  It's possible that this Amos moved to Willington, CT. Amos is not mentioned in the settlement of Nathaniel Richardson's estate in 1714.  There is no payment for "journey to Connecticut," so no evidence that this Amos moved to Connecticut.
  • Amos b. Dec. 3, 1721
Benjamin b. Aug. 27, 1700, d. Sep. 5, 1700

Possibility 2 - from Vinton, John. The Richardson MemorialPortland, ME: Brown Thurston & Company, 1876 - not very promising . . . and Richardson, Rosell. Amos Richardson of Boston & Stonington, New York, NY: Richardson, 1906.

Generation I.
  • Amos Richardson b. England, d. in Boston or Stonington, CT Aug. 5, 1683, md. Sarah (--?--) d. Sept. 1683
Nothing known about him before May 22, 1639. On that date he was a witness at Boston with Stephen Winthrop of a deed from Governor Winthrop o Thomas Purchase.
Described by Savage as a merchant tailor, he was closely connected with the Winthrop family. In 1683 Hawley Street in Boston was called Richardson's lane. This was his home for more than 20 years and probably until he moved to Stonington ca. 1663. This is where his children were born.
He also obtained a number of grants of land, very early in the settlement at Pequot. The New London town records show the following: "Memorandum for town meeting Sept. 20, 1651, Amos Richardson is to have a lot."
Caulkin's History states that he was from Boston and had commercial dealings with the planters and that instead of taking up a new lo he purchased that of Richard Post on Post Hill. "Aug.  9, 1653. House lot to Amos Richardson's brother, the millwright (afterwards called brother-in-law)."
Pequot, now New London embraced the present town of Stonington.
1656 - Oct. 14 - Amos Richardson & Major John Hauhorne were plaintiffs in lawsuit against John Divan.
1662 - March 8 - Sent along with Edward Hutchinson and William Hudson to Rhode Island with a letter from Massachusetts o settle troubles in the Pequot County, later denounced as intruders.
1663 - Amos probably moved to Stonington, CT, but retained his residence in Boston for a number of years.
Amos Richardson owned property in what is now Rhode Island. The territory was claimed by both Rhode Island and Connecticut. He was active in pressing the claims of Connecticut.
Major John Mason [our grandpa], the noted Indian fighter, seems to have opposed the action of his colony, probably on account of his friendship for Roger Williams. This so exasperated Amos Richardson that he publicly denounced him as a traitor to the colony.
In 1670 Mason sued him for defamation of character and appealed to the General Court for the appointment of a committee to investigate the charge. He secured a judgment for 100 pounds damages in the County Court, but the case was appealed and before further action Mason died, which ended the matter.
Generation II.

Richardson Family History File #6 - Deacon Nathan Richardson Family
Gen. I - Deacon Nathan md. ca. 1724 1) Esther (--?--) Richardson & ca. 1729 2) Tabitha (--?--)
Gen. II -
Nathan b. 1725, d. 1817 md. 1750 Mary Pierce
Esther b. 1727, md. 1753 Joshua Pierce of Woburn, MA
Tabitha b. 1730
John b. 1731/2, d. 1785 md. 1753 Hannah Richardson
Amos b. 1733 Woburn, MA, d. before 1807 Templeton, MA md. 1762 1) Bethiah Richardson & 1779 Susannah (Dolbear) Hudson - this line is given incorrectly in this and succeeding generations in the Richardson Memorial by Vinton. Amos is said to have died in 1769 or 1770 but it no doubt was his wife, Bethiah who died around that time. There is no death record of an Amos in Woburn nor was there another Amos living there who could have been of Woburn when he bought land in Templeton. +
Jotham b. 1735, d. 1771 Woburn, MA, md. 1759 Phebe Whittemore
Mary b. 1737

Gen. III children of Amos Richardson & wives Bethiah Richardson & Susannah Hudson:
Bethiah b. 1763, d. 1763
Amos b. 1764 Woburn, MA, d. after 1850 Fairfax, VT, md. 1787 Sarah (Cutler) Whitcomb
Aaron b. 1766, d. young
Bethiah (2nd) b. 1767, d. young
Mary b. 1769 twin
Lydia b. 1769 twin

The fact that Amos b. 1764, d. 1850 in Fairfax, VT where our Mary (Richardson) Powell's children end up makes me think we are somehow related to this line.
