Dunn, Mrs. M.H. Early Lincoln County History, no imprint.
Lincoln  County map showing stations, wilderness road and rivers.
The region now constituting the Commonwealth of Kentucky . . . was owned by Virginia, being a part of Fincastle County which was created by Virginia out of Botetourt County, February 1772.  In 1776, Virginia cut this region off from Fincastle County and created Kentucky County. Kentucky County became entitled to separate county court, to justices of the peace, sheriff, constables, coroner and militia officers. This brought law for the first time to the Kentucky territory.
In 1780, the legislature of Virginia thought it advisable to divide the County of Kentucky into three counties. Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln became counties November 1st, 1780.  . . . Lincoln County was located south of the Kentucky River, was the largest of the three counties and was named in honor of Benjamin Lincoln, native of Massachusetts and an officer in the Revolution in command of the Southern army.
Stanford is one of the oldest towns in Kentucky, founded by an act of the legislature in 1786. Main Street in Stanford was the old buffalo path through this territory in pre-settlement and pioneer days.
