Anson County was formed from Bladen County in 1750 which was 39 years prior to statehood, and the birth of our nation. The first permanent settlement in North Carolina Territory was established in 1653 by settlers coming south from Virginia. It was not until 80 years later that the population reached 14,000 persons. Prior to the revolution North Carolina experienced three great waves of immigrants. In a matter of a few years came more than 20,000 Highland Scotch immigrants they settled mostly in the southeastern section of the state. Later large groups of Scotch Irish came from Pennsylvania. Most of them settled in the western section of the state. By the year 1760, there were approximately 15,000 German immigrants in Forsyth and Guilford counties.

It was in 1663 and 1665 that Charles II granted to eight men, who had helped him regain the English throne, an enormous expanse of land in colonial America in which is found present-day North Carolina. Under the two charters, the eight Lords Proprietors received, with other rights and privileges, the authority to grant land. The device by which the Lords granted land to the colonists was the land patent.
Land patents were of two kinds: purchase patents in which case the patentee paid a fee for the land, and patents received under the system of headrights. With the latter, a settler could obtain a given quantity of land simply by being in the colony and/or paying for the importation of other settlers into the colony.
The mechanics for acquiring land from the Proprietors was relatively simple. Once an area was open to settlement, one had only to make application to the representatives of the Lords Proprietors for the land he wanted. The Council then issued a land warrant (an order) to the provincial surveyor to set apart certain land which was loosely described on the face of the warrant. The surveyor located the tract using metes and bounds, an acient system, whereby land was related to natural barriers - the rivers, the sandy banks, the sounds, the streams. Identifiable flora, indigenous to the Carolina area, such as pines, the various oaks, maples and dogwood were used as property corners and witness trees.
Next the surveyor set down a detailed land description, reciting the courses (direction in degrees) and distances (measured in poles) necessary to find the land exactly. And finally, the surveyor was required to make a plat ( a map) of the acreage surveyed. The Council then issued the land patent (a document) to the patentee. The land warrant and survey were filed with the Secretary of the colony and eventually the land patents were recorded in bound volumes.
Thus North Carolina has among the Secretary of State's land records some thirty four hundred land patents of the Proprietary period and it is from this group of land patents on record in the Secretary of State's Land Grant Office, Administration Building, Raleigh, North Carolina that the abstracts in this book were made.

Pleas & Quarter Sessions Court at court house in Rockford on second Monday in May 1800; petition of Henry Speer; it is the unanimous opinion of court with 7 justices on the bench that clerk certify to Register of Rowan Co. to alter a deed by James Innis & Francis Corbin agents of Earl Granville & for Earl Granville, to Morgan Bryan for 510 ac dated Oct. 27, 1772 in following manner: deed to be altered to read begins at a white oak on S side of Deep Cr. runs N 340 poles to a post oak, E 240 poles to a spanish oak, S 340 poles to a stake, & W 240 poles to beginning; it appears to court that land originally intended to be sold by Earl Granville to Morgan Bryan by the said deed provided the line trees marked as by witnesses introduced to this court; clerk is to certify to said Register to alter the conveyance from Morgan Bryan to John Kimbrough registered in his office; and certify to Surry Co. All known original wills for Johnston County are located in the North Carolina Archives. Johnston County was established in 1746 by an act of the general assembly of the province of North Carolina, from parts of Edgecomb and Craven counties. Parts of Johnston county were taken to form Lenoir, Wayne, Greene and Wake counties.
The first courthouse was located in Walnut Creek in what is now Wayne County, near the present town of Goldsboro. Two parishes were formed for the county in 1756, St. Stevens parish in the western part and St. Patricks in the east. This division of the county helped to establish the dividing line in 1759 when the county of Dobbs was formed from the eastern part. Dobbs county was abolished in 1791 and all of the records of early Johnston county went with the newer counties.
The second courthouse was near what today is the town of Clayton, at Hinton's Quarters. When Wake county was formed in 1771, the courthouse was again moved to the Neuse River crossing at Smith's Ferry known today as Smithfield. The courthouse was moved one block eastward, a few years later, to the present site at 2nd & Market Streets, and there it has remained on Court House Square.

Wayne County was a wealthy county in comparison with others in the area. The town of Waynesborough was incorporated in 1787 and served as the county seat until 1850. It was a thriving place with many merchants. There were very few deeds of trust and Sheriffs' sales in the deed books prior to 1820, but aafter that date they increased year by year until the end of this volume. The merchants were involved in many of these mortgage deeds and bought and sold tracts of land and negroes.
There were many sales of lands by people who migrated to other states, some by the individuals themselves and some by power of attorney. A few of these tracts of land were small but, on the whole, the sizes of the tracts which changed hands as late as 1832 were much larger than those in several of the neighboring counties.
