Joseph and Jabez Perkins, with an older brother, Matthew, removed from Ipswich, Mass., and bought land in Connecticut in 1695, about 2,000 acres in the town of Norwich; this portion of the town was afterward the town of Lisbon.
The two brothers were leading men in the affairs of the town and church during their lives; their descendants are still quite numerous in the region and are also found scattered over a great part of the United States and have continued to take leading parts in the communities where they dwell. Records:
1695 - at age 18 Jabez and his brother Joseph age 21 purchased a large tract of land in that part of Norwich is now Lisbon. On which after his marriage, he settled. He became one of the wealthiest and most honored citizens of Norwich.
1701 - at age 24 he was admitted
1718 - Newent, CT - sixteen persons on the roll of accepted inhabitants were characterized as Farmers in ye Crotch of ye Rivers [Shetucket & Quinebaug] included Jabez Perkins and his brother Joseph.
1720 - Jabez & Joseph Perkins split the property that they held jointly.
1724/5 - Feb. 22 entry in Joshua Hempstead's diary - fryd [Friday] 22 itt Snowed about ye midle of ye day about 2 or 3 Inches deep. I Set out in the morning for ye farm. I got Capt. Jabez Perkins & Lt. Bishop to go over with me to view the farm & apprize itt. they have Aprized itt at forty Shillings p[er] Acre Considering itt as wild Land without any Regard to the Improvemt on itt. I pd them 10s 0d for their Service & 2s 0d for our ferryage & Expence & I came down to uncle Greenfield Larebe's & Lodged their. Mr. John Gardiner was Intered in ye Govrs Tomb.
1725 - the proprietors of the common and undivided land put an end to all controversy by giving a quit-claim deed to Capt. Jabez Perkins, Lt. Samuel Bishop, Mr. Joseph Perkins, and Mr. John Safford, of all the Indian land in the crotch of the rivers, and of all contained in Major Fitch's 1800 acre grant, for the sum of £75 money in hand, paid to said proprietors, provided that the Indians should be allowed to remain and occupy the tract that land had been secured to them. To these purchasers and to those who should claim under them, the town confirmed the title of reversion. The Indians dwindled away, and in 1745 the descendants of Owaneco and other principal Mohegans, for the sum of £137, executed a quit-claim deed of the Indian reservation in favor of the English claimants. This instrument, which extinguished the last aboriginal claim to land in the nine-miles-square, was in substance as follows:
Ann alias Cutoih, Betty Aucum widow, Wedemow daughter of Mahomet deceased, Ann, otherwise young Ben's wife, all of whom are descendants of Owaneco, late sachem of Mohegan, and the said young Ben or Ben Uncas Jr. and Daniel Pauganeek, all of Bishop, Joseph Perkins, Jacob Perkins, John Safford, Joseph Safford and Solomon Safford, to all of them in proportion as they now possess - do now relinquish all right and title to the tract of 300 acres more or less in Newent, in the crotch of the rivers Quinebaug and Showtucket, called the Indian Land, abutting southeasterly on the Quinebaug. - April 9, 1745.

1727 - May 30 entry in Joshua Hempstead's diary - Thursd. 30 fair. a Child of [ ] buried an Infant. I was at the Supr Court al day. I got freeholders appointed to Divide & Set out the part or Share of Land belonging to Patience & Lucy my 2 youngest Sisters according to the order of the Court of Assistance in May 1707. they are Capt Jabez Perkins Lt. Samll Bishop & Mr. Thos Prenttis. Wm. Watkins an Irishman was Branded in ye forehead & had his Right Ear Cut of or Cropt for Burglary for breaking into Mr. Chapmans house on the Sabath or lords day & Stealing a hatt Cloth's & money to ye vallue of £22 wch he Restored & was also to pay ye Sd Lt Jere Chapman £44 he to be Sold [ ].
1730 - April 28 - all the freemen were enrolled. They amounted to 158; thirteen more were added in September, making 171. The first on the list, and probably so placed in respect to age and dignity, were Joseph Backus, Esq., the three reverend ministers, Lord, Willes, and Kirtland, and the two deacons, Simon and Christopher Huntington. After these come Samuel and Israel Lothrop, William Hide, Esq., Mr. Thomas Adgate, Capt. Jabez Perkins, Capt. Benajah Bushnell, and Capt. John Leffingwell.
1739/40 - Feb. 12 Jabez age 62 wrote his will.
In the name of God, Amen, the twelfth day of February one thousand seven hundred & thirty nine, forty, I Jabez Perkins of Norwich in ye County of New London in the Colony of Connecticut in New England, being indissposed in body, tho of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God, therefore and calling to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for man once to die Do make & ordain this my Last will & Testament.And principally & first of all I Recomend my soul into ye hand of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in Decent Christian burial at the discression of my Executor hereafter named nothing Doubting but at the Resurrection I shall Receive the ---- again by the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life I give, devise & dispose of the same in ye following manner and form that all my just debts and funeral charges shall be paid in convenient time after my decease by my Executor.1747 - March 13 - Probate record:
Item I give to Charity my dearly beloved wife one third part of all my moveable Estate not before disposed of excepting my husbandry tools, cordwainer tools & currier tools to be at her dispose forever and also I do give to my sd. wife ye one third part of ye Income or product of my housested & house & barn that is thereon which I have before given to my Loving son Jacob Perkins by a deed of gift and therein Referred to one third part of the Income thereof for ye wife & benefit of my sd wife during ye time she shall continue my widow, and farther my will is that my sd wife shall have a third part of ye products of all ye other Lands that I shall die dispossesed of during ye sd. time.
Item I give to the heirs of my son Jabez deceased viz: Jabez, Elkanah & Samuell and ye Heirs a certain piece of Land in ye Township of Norwich aforesd. Containing about thirty one acres Lying between ye Land of Daniel Corning & ye land of ye heirs of my Brother Joseph Deceased & also my will is that my sd son Jabez [Jacob?] shall have all my other Lands not yet dissposed of, he & his heirs forever. He Paying to my six Daughters viz: Hannah Huntington*, Elizabeth Deming, Mary Kirtland, Lucy Bushnell, Judith Leonard, Charity Perkins, to them or those that shall Lawfully represent them pay to each of them so much money with what they have received as to make their portions Equal to one hundred thirty one pounds of ye perfect currency, within three years after my decease, or he paying the Lawful Interest he shall have Liberty for ye Space of three years move to Improve sd money, but if my Sd. son Jacob shall neglect or refuse to pay ye above Sd. ---- as is before exprest then my will is that my aforesd. Daughters shall have as much of ye Land Last mentioned as will make ye complement of ye portions as is before Expressed to be at the disposal of them and their heirs forever as they shall see good.
Item I give & bequeath to my Loving son Jacob my homestead containing one hundred & twenty eight acres, with ye buildings thereon with one half of ye great meadow for quality & quantity as it is described in a deed of gift to him, not yet on record, to be his & his heirs forever, with one half of ye husbandry tools, cordwainer tools & Currier tools, with my silverheaded cane my fire/fine lock gun and a suit of my best apparel this to be the whole of my son Jacobs portion.
Item To Jedediah the oldest son of my son Jabez deceased I give one half of my cordwainer & curriers tools and ye second best of my apparel.
Item the one half of my husbandry tools to be Equally divided between ye male Heirs of my sd. Son Jabez.
Item I give to my Dearly beloved wife Charity her riding horse saddle & bridle.
Item I give all my moveable Estate which is not already mentioned to be Equally divided among my six Daughters.
Item it is my will that if either of my sd Daughters Should Die & Leave no Heir of her body Lawfully begotten then her part of my Estate shall be Equally divided among my daughters then surviving or their Heirs.
Item I do hereby Constitute make & ordain my son Jacob Perkins my sole executor of this my Last will & Testament and I do hereby utterly disallow Revoke & disa---- all and every other former testaments, wills, Legacies & bequests and Executors by me in any ays before named Ratifying & Con------ this and no other to be my Last Will & Testament.

Know all men by these Presents that we Sam'll Lynde of Saybrook in the County of New London and Colony of Connecticut in New England and Hannah Lynde his wife Have Received of Jacob Perkins of Norwich in the County afforesd. Executor to ye Last Will and Testament of Capt. Jabez Perkins, Late of sd. Norwich Deceased, the full of all that Legacy which was given by the said Jabez Perkins in and by his Last Will & Testament to his Daughter the said Hannah Perkins (alias Hannah Lynde) we do therefore for us our heirs Executors and adminstr. acquit and Discharge him the sd. Jacob Perkins his heirs, Exectrs. and Adminstr. from all and all manner of Dues, Demands lien or liens of money as he the sd. Jacob Perkins is Executor of aforsd. on the account of ye Legacy affordsd. Willed Bequeathed or Given to ye said Hannah Lynde by her said Father in his last will affordsd. in witness whereof we have hereunto sett our hands and seals this thirteenth Day of March AD 1747.
