Among the first white settlements made in the New River Valley was Draper's Meadows, founded by the Draper and Ingles families in 1748, near what is now Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia.
On Sunday, July 8, 1755, this settlement was surprised by a band of marauding Shawnee from beyond the Ohio and most of the settlers were killed or captured. William Ingles was in the woods near by at the time and managed to make his escape, but his wife, Mary Ingles, was captured. She was carried away by the raiders, who moved down to Bluestone, up the Bluestone River to the head of Paint Creek, thence to Campbells Creek and across the Ohio. On this journey Mary Ingles was forced to make salt for her Indian captors, the first made by a white person in West Virginia. She escaped in the latter part of the same year and after incredible hardships found her way back and rejoined her husband. She furnished valuable information to the white settlers in frustrating other Indian raids.
The first white persons known to have reached the site of Charleston were Mary Ingles and Betty Draper, who had been captured by Indians during the Ingles-Draper massacre at Draper Meadows (Blacksburg), Viginia, in 1755, and were being taken to the Shawnee village at Chillicothe, Ohio.

A William Robertson serving as justice in 1794
1794 an Edward Robertson summoned to answer Joseph Craycraft in a plea of slander £500 damage 13 March 1792. Craycraft complained that Robertson, 1792, uttered false and slanderous word to wit: "he (the said plaintiff meaning) is a dam'd thief, he stole a hat and I will prove him a thief." We the jury find for the plaintiff £20 damage.
1799 indenture of Ann Bodin aged 8 years old the first day of December 1798 bound an apprentice to James Robertson of Monongalia County to learn the art of sewing, to serve him until she arrives to the age of eighteen years.

1805 Jailor Elihu Horton's account dated 23 Sept. 1802. Horton charged $.25 per day for keeping John Dunlap (5 days), Henry Breakiron (5 days) and Thomas Draper (5 days). He charged $.50 each time the irons of the prisoners were put on, took off or altered. One blanket cost $3 and one tub "for use of prisoners" cost $1. $.50 was paid for 12 hours of guarding at the District Jail.
1808 District Court, Harrison County, VA. James Bartlett summoned to answer Edward Harbert in a plea of trespass, 21 August 1804. Harbert complained that in February 1804 in Monongalia County Bartlett, with force and arms, seized took and carried away his dark bay mare ($100) and therefore he brings suit. May 1806 term of court, dismissed, agreed.
