November 30th - Feast of St. Andrew

St. Andrew is the patron saint of several countries including Scotland, Greece, Romania and Russia.  The apostle was the younger brother of St. Peter.  After Christ's death Andrew is said to have preached the gospel to people along the Black Sea and Dnieper river as far north as Kiev.  There is also a tradition that he founded the See of Byzantium in 38 AD.  He was martyred by crucifixion in Patras.  There is speculation that Andrew was on an X shaped cross which became the basis of the St. Andrew's Cross which appears on the flag of Scotland and in England's Union Jack.

November 20th - Feast of St. Edmund

King Edmund of East Anglia from 855 to his death on November 20, 869.  Very little is known about Edmund.  He was killed in battle with the Great Heathen Army aka Vikings led by Ragnar Lodbrok's sons.  A church was built in Bury St. Edmunds in 1095 and Edmund's relics were moved there.  It became one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in England. During the middle ages St. George replaced Edmund as the patron saint of England.

November 11th - Feast of St. Martin of Tours

Also known as Martinmas originated in France then spread through Europe and to England.  It is a celebration of the harvest and began a period of fasting of three days per week or 56 days through Epiphany.  Today we call this period Advent.

It has traditionally been celebrated by eating goose because St. Martin of Tours hid in a goose pen to avoid being ordained bishop.  Butchering of beef and hogs was part of the activities surrounding Martinmas.  The feast was somewhat like the American Thanksgiving and included bonfires.

November 1st - Feast of All Saints

All Saints Day, All Hallows Day or Hallowmas is a veneration of all the saints, martyred or otherwise that have gone before.  In England the day corresponds with an earlier Celtic festival called Samhain which venerates the dead.  It was generally celebrated beginning with a vigil held on October 31st which has morphed into Halloween or All Hallows Eve.

The Litany of the Saints is recited communally.
Lord have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us. Christ hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.
