Census:
1840  Illinois, Clay Co. - age 2 with her parents James & Elizabeth (Tewalt) Smith and her seven siblings.

1850 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 11, orphan living with her brother and two sisters.

1855 - not found on census

1860 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 21 with W.H.H. and their two sons ages 1 and 3.

1865 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 26 with William and their children.  The census is difficult to read.  They had at least four children.

1870 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 31 she is listed as keeping house.  She and William have six children ages 1 to 13.

1880 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 41 with William and their nine children ages 2 months to 18.  The oldest boys ages 13, 16 and 18 are listed as farmers.

1900 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 61 Emily is listed as being married 44 years. She has had 13 children and 10 are still living.  There is only one child in the household, her son Pearl who is 20.

1910 Illinois, Clay Co. - age 71 Emily and William are on their own on the farm.  She is listed as a housewife.

1920 Illinois, Iola - age 81 Emily is a widow renting a home in Iola.  She has no occupation.

1925 Obituary:
Emily Smith Fitzgerald, daughter of Elizabeth & Joseph Smith was born in Ohio, October 9, 1838. She died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Oscar [Flaura] Burgess at Flora, Ill. March 23, 1925 at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 14 days.
She had been in failing health for two years but was able to be up and around the house until the last 2 weeks of her life. 
She was united in marriage to W.H.[H.] Fitzgerald September 17th [26] 1856. To this union were born 13 children 8 sons and 5 daughters, nine of whom survive her. John, Howard and Lafe Fitzgerald of Iola. Steward of Louisville. Wakeman of Clay City, Pearl of Farina. Mrs. Rose Wolfe of Fairfield. Mrs. Laura Woods of Louisville, Mrs. Flaura Burgess of Flora. Two sons James and David and two infant daughters preceded her in death. 
Her husband fell dead from heart failure Oct. 13, 1911 at the age of 76 years.  
Deceased was the youngest and last of the old Smith family. She came to Illinois with her parents more than 80 years ago. 
The brothers were John, Edward, James, Joseph and Jacob and two sisters Margaret and Elizabeth. 
Short funeral services were held at the home in Flora at 2:30 p.m. the same day of her death conducted by Rev. Doty pastor of the First Christian Church of Flora. After services the remains were taken tot he home of her son Howard at Iola and at 2 p.m. Tuesday the usual funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church.  Conducted by Rev. Russell of Farina. A large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay their last respects to an old relative and friend. After the services she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Iola Cemetery there to await the coming of Him who said I am the resurrection. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. 
Farewell dear mother, the last is done, your toils are over they victory won.
