In Memoriam - October 26th


1715 Barnabas Lathrop son of Rev. John & Anna Lathrop in Barnstable, MA age 79.  He was baptized in Scituate, MA in 1636.  Barnabas married 1) Susanna Clark and 2) Abigail. 

1896 Sidney A. Powell was born on July 11, 1819 in Richford, VT and was the son of Horace Powell, also a native of Vermont.  He followed the trade of a carpenter, and also that of farming, and in 1840 the family removed to Hampden County, MA.  After a residence there of about ten years, they removed to Schoharie County, NY and in 1854, the subject of this sketch came to Richland County, and settled on this farm.  His first purchase was eighty acres, where he now lives, and he at once commenced improving this land, and as his means would allow, bought other lands in addition.  He now owns 240 acres, largely improved.  He was married April 13, 1849, to Susan Parsons.  She was born April 16, 1825 in Sharon, NY.  This union has been blessed with four children - Dewitt P., Clarissa M. and Charles J. Henry died in 1867 in his sixteenth year.  Mr. Powell has been Overseer of the Poor two years.  His son Dewitt P. has been, for the past two years, Postmaster at Amity. [From History of Richland Co., IL.]  Sidney is buried in Amity Cemetery in Richland Co., IL.

1914 William Smith in Shelby Co., IL age 63.  The son of James & Susan (Runyon) Smith he was born in Scott Co., KY. 

1928 Wiliam Runyon age 72 Crestwood, KY the son of James & Nancy (Young) Runyon.  He was born in Oldham Co., KY in 1855.  William married Virginia Pearce and they had three children: John, Maud and unnamed child.  He is buried in Duncan Memorial Chapel Cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.

1982 Ralph Page age 72 in Watsonville, CA the husband of Caroline Lathrop.  He was born in Duluth, MN in 1910.

2009 Barbara Jean Johnson, 64, of Belle Rive, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
She was born in Hamilton County on July 9, 1945, a daughter of Charles and Freida (Erkman) Gunter.  She married David L. Johnson on July 28, 1963, and he survives.  She enjoyed quilting and sewing and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dahlgren Baptists Church with the Revs. Robert Sefried, Billy Duncan and Chuck McCormick officiating.  Interment will follow at Union Cemetery south of Dahlgren.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the church.
In addition to her husband, Barbara is survived by her mother Frieda Gunter of McLeansboro; a son, David G. Johnson and friend Paula Burris and her daughter Brooke of McLeansboro; daughters Lori L. Peterson and husband Scott of Belle Rive and Crystal Cisco of McLeansboro; seven grandchildren, Cody, Holly and Lexi Johnson, Harlie Peterson, Blake Johnson, Kaylen Sweetin and Emmilia Cisco; three step-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Edward Gunter and wife Alice of Eldorado, Donald Gunter and wife Shirley of McLeansboro, Dan Gunter and wife Rita of Springerton, Fred Gunter of McLeansboro, David Gunter and wife Jeana of McLeansboro, Janet Vedeto and husband Larry of McLeansboro and Ruby Everett and husband Charles of McLeansboro; and a son-in-law Ronald L. Cisco of Taylorville.  She also leaves many friends and relatives and her pet dog, Nataleigh.
She was preceded in death by her father Charles Gunter; a grandson, Derrick Chad; and her father- and mother-in-law Henry and Louise Johnson.
Barbara was a member of Dahlgren Baptist Church.
Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren is in charge of arrangements.
