In Memoriam August 17th

1728 Anthony Hinkle while answering a call of a sick parishioner one very dark night, upon his return home, his horse stumbled, fell and fatally injured him.  He died the same night at his home on Chestnut Hill.  Anthony was born in Merenberg, Germany in 1668 the son of George & Anna (Dentzer) Hinkle.  He married Maria Dentzer and they had twelve children: Johann Nicholas, Johanna Fredericka, Johann Melchior, Johann Gerhard, Maria Elizabeth, George Rudolphus, Anna, Johann Justus, Benigna Maria, Jacob Anthony, Maria Catherine and Johann Philip.  Anthony was a minister in Germany and after migrating to Pennsylvania in 1717 he founded St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Germantown, PA.  He was 59 years old at the time of his death and is buried at St. Michael’s.

1826 Armistead Morehead died between August 17 and September when his estate went into probate.  He was born in Fauquier Co., VA ca. 1760 the son of John & Mary Morehead.  He married 1) Anne Morgan and they had eight children: Charles, Mary , Susanna, Julia, John, Alfred, William and Henry.  He married 2) Polly Garris and they had a son Armistead.  Armistead died in Muhlenberg Co., KY.

In the name of God Amen, I Armistead Morehead of the county of Muhlenberg & Commonwealth of Kentucky being weak in body & being weak in body & being also in my perfect mind & memory but calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing & believing that it is appointed for all mankind once to die I have thought it proper while in my perfect mind to make this my last will & testament.

In the first place my will is that all my just debts be paid.

Secondly, I give & bequeath to my beloved wife Polly Morehead one feather bed & furniture three cows to her & her heirs forever.  It is also my will that my said wife have the use of of the farm whereon I now live until my son Armstead Morehead arrives to the age of twenty one years.  I also give my said wife one horse creature to be valued at fifty dollars to her & her heirs forever.  Also twenty dollars in money that she may have an opportunity of buying such farming tools & household furniture as she may think proper.  I give & bequeath to my daughter Susan Watkins five shillings to her & her heirs forever.  I give & bequeath to my grandchildren Cynthia Ann Hughs & Charles Hughes children & heirs of my deceased daughter Polly Hughes one shilling each to them & their heirs forever.  I give & bequeath Julia Edwards five shillings to her & her heirs forever.  I give & Bequeath to my son Armstead when he arrives to the age of twenty one years one hundred & sixty four acres of land including the farm whereon I now live to him & his heirs forever.  The balance of my lands I leave to my two sons William & Henry being one hundred & sixty three acres each.  My will is that all my stock of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs etc.  of every description that is not before willed (my farming utensils, household & kitchen furniture be sold on a credit of twelve months and the proceeds thereof be equally divided between my six sons, Charles, Alfred, John, William, Henry & Armstead as they severally come of age to them & their heirs etc. forever.  I give & bequeath to my son William my set of blacksmith tools to him & his heirs forever.

At my death my death my will is that my negro man Sam & my negro girl Lear be hired out yearly until my youngest son comes of age at which time it is my will that that they be sold at a credit of twelve months and the money arising from their hire and sale be equally divided among my three youngest sons, William, Henry & Armistead & their heirs forever.  It is my will that my three youngest sons William, Henry & Armstead pay one hundred & ten dollars each an equal portion out of their part of my estate for the said negro girl.

Whereas I have heretofore given to my son Alfred sixty-eight acres of land where he now lives & having never made him a title to the same I now give & bequeath the same to him & his heirs forever.

And should neither of my three youngest sons to wit William, Henry & Armstead die before coming of the age of twenty one It is my will that the survivor of them enjoy the property hereby willed to the one that so dies.  I do hereby appoint my son Alfred Morehead & John Redman to be executor of this my last will & testament requiring them to have my body buried decently  & in a Christian like manner to be paid for out of the proceeds of the first sale of my property named in this will.  I do hereby revoke & make void all former wills by me made & declare this & no other to be my last will & testament.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17^th day of August in the year of our Lord 1826.
