In Memoriam June 13th

1901 Fleta Lawrence born and died in Fairfield, the daughter of William & Aohalia (Robertson) Lawrence.

1964 Joseph Franklin Mateer, 88, longtime Wayne City banker and businesssman, died at 1:33 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since June 2nd.

He entered the hospital after suffering a light stroke.

Mr. Mateer served as president of the First National Bank of Wayne City for 35 years and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of that banking institution.

He operated the Wayne City Seed Company for many years.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon (today) from the Wayne City Christian church, with Bro. Loyal Gallaher officiating.  Interment was in Thomason cemetery.  The Richardson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mateer, one of the county's few remaining Spanish-American war veterans, was born in Four Mile township, Jan. 28th, 1876, the son of Anthony and Rebecca Scudamore Mateer.

On May 19th, 1920, he was married to Fannie May Gurley.  They had no children.

Mr. Mateer was a member of the Wayne City Christian church. 

Surviving are his widow; a sister, Mrs. O.H. Harvey of Wayne City; two nephews Coyn Mateer, Mt. Vernon and Dwight Chase, Miscoutah [sic]; and five nieces, Mrs. Vrigine Richardson, Charleston; Mrs. C.D. Ham, Mt. Vernon; Mrs. Harlan Ihrke, Whittier, Calif.; Opal Chase, Belle Rive; and Eva Chase, Centralia.

1979 Rex Laughlin age 58.  He was born in Bridgeport, IL in 1921 and married Wanda Lathrop in 1941.  They had three children: Carmen, Gary and Orson.  Rex is buried in Crest Haven Memorial Park in Claremont, IL.
