Temperance (Perry) Parrish

Temperance Perry was born in 1789 in Franklin County, North Carolina.  Her father was Jeremiah "Redhead" Perry. He was called that because he was a redhead and to help distinguish from all the other Jeremiah Perrys living in Franklin County.  Franklin County is just north east of Raleigh, NC.

The 1790 Franklin County, NC census lists the following Perrys:

James, Burwell, Jeremiah, Jeremiah, John Sr., Joshua, William, Joshua, Ephraim, Drury, Jeremiah, John, Ephraim

Jeremiah - 2-1-7-5 2 males under 16, 1 male over 16, 7 females and 5 slaves
Jeremiah - 1-1-1-3 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16, 1 female and 3 slaves - not Redhead
Jeremiah - 1-1-3-3 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16, 3 females and 3 slaves

The 1800 Franklin County, NC census lists two Jeremiah Perrys:

Temperance married Ezekiel Parrish in Rowan County, NC ca. 1806.  Rowan County is on the western edge of the North Carolina piedmont.  In 1806 Rowan was about double it's current size.  Davidson County was created from the northeast part of the county in 1822. The Parrish family and relatives lived on both sides of the line.  Temperance & Ezekiel had nine children in North Carolina - Cynthia, Willey (f), Micajah, Louisa, Elizabeth, Mary Frances, Amos, Howard and Martha.  Between 1824 and 1829 the family moved to Putnam County, IN where Ezekiel died at age 43. Their son Ezekiel was born in 1830 in Owen County, IN.  Temperence never remarried.

1 male under 5 - Ezekiel
1 male 5-10 - Howard
1 male 10-15 - Amos
2 males 15-20 - Micajah and unknown
3 females 10-15 - Mary Frances, Elizabeth and Louisa

Temperance is listed in the 1840 Owen County, IN census:

1 female 15-20 this could be her daughter Elizabeth or Amos' wife Elizabeth
1 female 40-50 Temperance

Temperance was still living in Owen County, IN in 1850:

Her real estate was valued at $600.  The Catherine listed is her daughter-in-law Catherine (Gentle) Parrish.  She and Ezekiel were married when Catherine was 13.  The census indicates that no one in the family can read or write.

Ezekiel and Catherine moved to Missouri ca. 1856.  Temperance probably moved with them.  They stayed in Missouri for several years moving to Wayne County, IL about 1869 where Ezekiel's sister Mary Frances lived with her husband John Gentle.  John was the brother of Ezekiel's wife Catherine.  The appear in the 1870 Wayne County IL census living in Four Mile Township.
