Marriages:

1866 Richard Thompson & Nancy Colclasure in Clay Co. IL.  Nancy was the daughter of Abraham & Catherine (Galbreath) Colclasure born 1838.  They had 9 children.  Nancy died before 1931.

1868 James Fitzgerald & Sarah Wise in Noble, IL.  James was the son of Derrit & Susaanah (Ferguson) Fitzgerald born 1820 in Gibson Co. IN.  Sarah was his second wife.  They had one son He married Elizabeth Taylor ca. 1841.  They had 5 children.    James died in 1872 in Illinois.

1893 John Gurley & Mary Eichorn.  John born 1846 in Illinois was the son of Leonard & Nancy (Warren) Gurley.  He was deaf and dumb.  She was born 1860 in Illinois the daughter of Peter Eichorn.

This has to be the saddest census record I’ve ever used.  It is 38 pages and is called the U.S. Federal Census – 1880 Schedules of Defective, Dependent and Delinquent Classes.  It begins with a census of the Jacksonville prison inmates and then moves through the list of insane, blind, deaf & dumb and orphans.  It does not give the current ages of the inmates.  It does list the cause of deafness.  These include diseases and other causes such as typhoid fever, measles, spotted fever, scarlet fever, brain fever, diphtheria, scrofula, chill and quinine.

They appear on a special census of deaf family marriages in 1893:

Unfortunately, Mary died in 1895.  She is buried in Zion Cemetery, Pawnee, IL.  John died in Union Co. IL in 1927 and he is buried in Thomason Cemetery, Wayne City, IL.

This past week I got J.J.'s admittance record to the Illinois Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb.  He was admitted as patient # 304, Oct. 12, 1858.  It gives his whole name as John Jasper Gurley and his occupation was a farmer.  He was 10 on January 22nd.  Lastly, his address was given as New Franklin Post Office in Wayne Co., IL, not Indiana as he reported above.  

1957 John Jones & Shirley Bond in Torrance, CA.  John is the son of James & Pearl (Keene) Jones & Shirley is the daughter of Henry & Lula (Robertson) Bond.  They have five children.
