April 17th

A single birthday 

1827 Clarinda Benefield in Huron, IN the daughter of Robert & Elizabeth (Blair) Benefield.  She died in Clay Co. IL in 1902.

Anniversaries

1816 William Lewis & Susan Colclasure in Orange Co. IN.  William was born 1784 in NC the son of Richard & Lydia (Field) Lewis.  He moved to Indiana ca. 1813.  Susan, the daughter of Abraham & Abigail (Dennen) Colclasure was born 1792 in either Kentucky or Indiana.  They moved to Clay County, Illinois about 1818.  They had eight children.  William died in 1844 and Susan in 1854 in Clay Co.


1836 John Gentle & Mary Frances Parrish in Putnam Co. IN.  John was born 1816 in Washington Co. IN and died 1874 in Jefferson Co. IL as a result of injuries received in a wagon accident.  He was the son of William & Elizabeth (Shepherd) Gentle.  John was a farmer and a member of the Masons.  Mary Frances was born in 1819 in Davidson/Rowan Co. NC the daughter of Ezekiel & Temperance (Perry) Parrish. She lived to be 85, dying in 1905 in Jefferson Co. IL. Her mother moved her family to Putnam Co., IN after Ezekiel’s death in 1829.  John & Mary Frances moved quite often.

Their last home in Jefferson County was adjacent to Mt. Olive Church.  John gave the land and helped build the original log church which is now part of the Jefferson County Historical Society Historical Village.  They had fourteen children.  John & Mary are buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

1941 Gale Bourland & Marie Gentle in Cape Girardeau, MO.  Gale died in 1972.  Marie was born 1916 in Bluford, IL the daughter of Calvin & Grace (Whitlatch) Gentle and the great granddaughter of John & Mary above.  The couple lived in Woodlawn, IL where they operated Bourland’s Service Station.  Marie also woked as a cook at Woodlawn grade school.  They had three children.  Gale and Marie are buried in the Woodlawn / Odd Fellows Cemetery in Woodlawn, IL.
